From Gruel To Foie Gras: Maguire Jail Inmates Cook Their Way To Success

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department has announced a partnership with an organization that provides job training to those of lesser financial means.

Job Train has been working with Silicon Valley residents since 1965.  They help prepare persons on welfare, unemployment and/or those with prior criminal convictions enter the workforce.  A spokesperson for the program said they have a 75% placement rate.

The sheriff's department has confirmed that Job Train has been offering classes for county inmates.  This allows Maguire Jail detainees to (more…)

Defendant Insists 500 Pot Plants Were For Personal Use

Thang Vinh Hoang never expected narcotics agents would bust him for growing pot.  He was even more surprised to find himself being booked into the San Mateo County Jail.

California law allows medical marijuana patients to grow several plants in order to cultivate their own medicine.  Persons who have a doctor's recommendation are able to cultivate up to six mature plants at any given time.

Menlo Park Police Station Gets Funding From Facebook

A representative from the Menlo Park Police Department has confirmed that a donation from Facebook is helping pay for a new substation.

Facebook has remained tight lipped on the matter.  Few details are known about how the social media giant and the Menlo Park PD partnership came together.
 
It is believed that Facebook may approached the city on their own.  Elected officials reported said the social media site is very active within the community.  They believe that Facebook may have heard about plans for the substation by keeping up on current local events.   City records show they will be picking up …

Couple held in San Mateo County Jail on $50,000 bail bonds

A young couple is being held in the San Mateo County Jail each on a $50,000 bail bond after they allegedly went on a crime spree throughout Peninsula, California. According to Patch.com, 18-year-old David Cooper and 19-year-old Keyana McLish met one another on an online dating website. After a few weeks of dating, Cooper held several individuals at gun point and robbed them while McLish was behind the wheel of the couple's getaway car. In one of the robberies, Cooper chased a man in San Mateo into his apartment building and stole the man's wallet and cellphone. The victim told investigators he watched …

$1 million bail bond set for yacht thieves

Three individuals who were arrested after they stole a yacht and hosted a party aboard the boat are being held in lieu of a $1.01 million bail bond. According to Mercury News, the three suspects stole an 82-foot Oyster Marine 82 luxury yacht named Darling.

The suspects were eventually arrested and identified as Leslie Gardner of Wyoming and Dario Mira and Lisa Modawell of Aptos, California. Mercury News reported the yacht is valued at more than $1 million and is the reason for the high bail. The three suspects are being held on suspicion of boat theft.

Redwood City Police Department arrest robbery suspects

Authorities from the Redwood City Police Department were able to find the two suspects in connection with a home robbery in February. According to Bay City News Service, 21-year-old Luis Trujillo and his 17-year-old female accomplice were arrested in Mexico February 27.

Police tracked the suspects to Mexicali where they were eventually arrested by Mexican authorities. The article stated they were transported to the U.S. border, given over to law enforcement officials from the United States and taken into custody.

Woman charged with 95 counts of forgery and theft

A woman from was recently arrested on 95 charges of theft and forgery. Sandy Delgado allegedly stole from the family she worked for as a housekeeper and nanny, according to the San Mateo County Times. She is being held at the San Mateo County Jail in lieu of $950,000 bail.

Her employer suspected she had stolen from them and reported it to police, launching an investigation in mid-January. Investigators suspect Delgado has been stealing from the family for the last four years.

Man given jail time after allegedly running over teen’s bike

A man who was arrested after he allegedly tried to run over two brothers on their bikes in downtown San Mateo last summer was sentenced to jail January 13. Jason Ramiro Hernandez-Lopez was given 90 days in jail. In November, he pleaded no contest to making felony threats in return for a four-month maximum sentence, according to the Daily Journal. His charges will also be dropped to a misdemeanor after he successfully completes half of his probation.

Man sues Redwood City police for being tased in 2010

A young manrecently filed a civil rights lawsuit against officers of the Redwood City Police Department. The teen, Marcelo Perez, said the officers used a taser on him and then allegedlytaunted him in a 2010 incident in downtown Redwood City, Palo Alto Daily News reported.

According to the lawsuit, Perez went into a Safeway store to use the restroom on September 25, 2010. He was accompanied by a friend, who stole a bottle of alcohol as they left the store, the Daily News reported. Employees followed the friend who they say they saw steal the alcohol.

County considers funding jail project with sales tax revenue

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is considering allocating revenue generated from an increased sales tax to the new jail project in Redwood City, the Palo Alto Daily News reported.

The sales tax in all of the county's cities will increase half a cent starting April 1, 2013, the source reported. In Half Moon Bay and Hillside, the sale tax will increase even more. The tax is expected to generate $60 million annually.
