Former councilman to spend 18 months in San Mateo Jail

A former councilman and insurance broker in Clayton is being held at the San Mateo County Jail for embezzling thousands of dollars from an insurance client, Bay area News reported. A judge sentenced Joe Medrano to serve three years in jail for stealing $159,000, the article stated. After serving 18 months at the jail, he will be eligible for probation.

Man in San Mateo jail caught with weapons

A man sitting in the San Mateo county jail as he awaits a murder trial has been charged with possessing three homemade shanks in the facility. The 60-year-old man, Gregory Leon Elarms Sr. pleaded no contest to having the weapons in the county lockup, in exchange for a sentence of no more than four years in prison for the crime, the San Mateo Daily Journal reported.

Contractor Booked Into San Mateo County Jail On Six Felonies

An Atherton-based contractor has been arrested and booked into the San Mateo County jail on six felony counts.  The arrest stems from recent work he did for a local resident and the charges include grand theft, diversion of funds, making or passing a fictitious check and one count of obtaining money by false pretenses.

Millbrae man booked at San Mateo County jail

A 49-year-old man was recently taken to a San Mateo County jail on suspicion he abused young relatives.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt told the San Mateo County Times that Richard Kenneth Watterworth was arrested at his home late last month after a family member reported the abuse of children, which is alleged to have been going on for a while. San Mateo teams up with other law enforcement agencies to combat gang activity

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department said it will work with local police agencies to combat crime in the area, NBC Bay Area reported. Former inmates of the Redwood City Jail are scheduled to have the opportunity to apply for positions at some major retail companies like Ikea and Target at a job fair in Redwood City on November 8. The fair will cater specifically to former convicts in an effort to help them leave their criminal lives behind and become active participants in society, the Palo Alto Daily News reported.

San Mateo County searching for multiple robbers

The San Mateo County Sheriff Department announced it is searching for the people responsible for two robberies, one that took place at a local consignment store and another at a 7-Eleven in Half Moon Bay.

No surveillance video or photos are available from Home Consignment Center, where robbers got away with stolen jewelry, KTVU reported, and so police are asking the public to aid in the search for the suspects. Police follow trail of cash, arrest suspected robber in Redwood City

A man who allegedly robbed a bank in Redwood City was arrested and is being held at a San Mateo County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, the Palo Alto Daily News reported.

Redwood City Police Sgt. Sean Hart said the man, Kendrick Roby, is believed to have robbed the BBVA Compass Bank on October 22. Authorities were able to follow a trail of loose cash to the apartment complex two blocks away that officials say Roby had escaped to, the article stated.

Former college employees arrested in San Mateo County

Two former employees of a local community college were arrested for allegedly embezzling more than $100,000 in public money.

Bradley Witham and Mark Boustos were both recently fired from the San Mateo County Community College after being charged  with improperly using the college's credit card, CBS reported.

“One of the individuals was using a procurement card that belonged to the district, making transactions online, purchasing numerous electronic items, and then selling them on websites like eBay and Craigslist and making a profit,” said Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti, according to CBS.
