A man who was arrested after he allegedly tried to run over two brothers on their bikes in downtown San Mateo last summer was sentenced to jail January 13. Jason Ramiro Hernandez-Lopez was given 90 days in jail. In November, he pleaded no contest to making felony threats in return for a four-month maximum sentence, according to the Daily Journal. His charges will also be dropped to a misdemeanor after he successfully completes half of his probation.

The Journal reported that on June 17, 2012, Hernandez-Lopez reportedly drove up behind one of the brothers near Fourth Avenue and Grant Street. According to the report, he then intentionally bumped the rear of the teen's bicycle with his SUV, and when the boy rode up on the sidewalk and dropped his bike to get away, Hernandez-Lopez then drove over the bicycle and dragged it for several blocks.

Witnesses to the incident wrote down the SUV's license plate and the two men in the car were later arrested, the Journal said. Hernandez-Lopez claimed the boys were swinging chains at the car as they drove by and told investigators that he never struck the teen or dragged his bike. Since his arrest, Hernnadez-Lopez has been out from behind bars on $100,000 bail.

Three men in jail after attempted robbery at a jewelry store

Three men remained in custody in San Mateo County after they attempted a jewelry store heist. Raymond Bradford, Rodney Mitchell and Robert Wheller Jr. pleaded not guilty on January 18 to charges of attempted robbery, the San Mateo County Times reported.

On January 16, the three men reportedly walked into Plaza Jewelers in North Fair Oaks with a gun, a hammer and a club. When the owner of the store discovered the men intended to rob the store, he cocked his gun. The three men then ran from store, according to the County Times.

A manhunt ensued after the suspects ran from the store and sped away in a car. The County Times said police were chasing the three men when they crashed their alleged getaway car. Police dogs, officers from surrounding cities and a California Highway Patrol airplane assisted in the search for the suspects. Two of the suspects were arrested the day of the attempted robbery, while the third was arrested the day after. The men will return to court February 1.
