The Berkeley Police Department has announced they were able to capture and arrest three Sacramento residents who are believed to have run over a man after a botched robbery attempt. The incident is said to have taken place in Dec. 2012.
Officers said a local man had been out walking his dog on the afternoon of Dec. 11. At the time he returned to his home he noticed a strange car parked in his driveway. A young female was seen sitting in the driver's seat of the vehicle and loud, unfamiliar noises were coming from inside the house. When the man and his dog approached the residence to check things out two younger males exited through a door and proceeded to run toward the vehicle. The man attempted to place himself between the perpetrators and the car but burglars knocked him to the ground. The driver ran over one of his legs as they pulled out of the driveway. The victim is reported to have been transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Responding officers found the home had been burglarized and initiated an investigation. Evidence was collected by crime scene investigators. Technicians said they were able to recover two sets of fingerprints. Officers said they were able to identify those individuals because their prints were already in the system. This allowed them to identify the third perpetrator as well as to pinpoint their respective locations. A department spokesperson said there were additional items recovered during the investigation that definitively tied the suspects to the crime.
Monique Robinson, 22 and Jesus Campos, 19 were arrested and booked into the Santa Rita Jail. The third suspect name was not released due to that person being under the age of 18. Robinson and Campos are not currently in custody. It is believed they may have hired an Alameda bondsman to help get them out of jail. Court information for the defendants was not readily available.
