How Not To Get Your Point Across

An Oakland man found himself in a pretty sticky situation last week after his hijinks at a City Council meeting landed him in jail.

No one is quite sure why 20 year-old Dante Cano was at the public meeting, but they are sure that he was out of order.  At some point, the man, who was screaming jibber jabber, ran toward and jumped on a raised speaking platform at the center of the room.

Officers said he was eventually detained, thanks to the efforts of community members and a city staffer.

The ball-cap and backpack-wearing young man was arrested and charged with …

Finding Balance: Bail Bonds VS Pretrial Services

The debate of how to handle pretrial inmates has been going on for half a century.

On one side, you have advocacy groups who say people are innocent until proven guilty and they shouldn't have to pay anything to get out of jail pending trial.  For them, a simple promise to appear is sufficient enough, and they feel it's up to society as a whole to make sure the defendant lives up to that obligation.

On the other side, you have others who point out that if someone has been arrested it's because there was probable cause to do so.  They …

The Brothers, The Money Squabble And The Hedge Clipper Attack

The Brothers, The Money Squabble And The Hedge Clipper Attack

It's not uncommon for siblings to fight with one another, but in San Diego, a recent squabble between brothers ended with one being arrested for attempted murder.

It all started late last Friday afternoon when police received a call about an family incident that was unfolding in Rolando.

Although there aren't too many details about the exact circumstances, what is known is that brother #1 seems to have owed brother #2 some money (and when those funds weren't returned as promised, things got a little bit out of hand).

That's when the oldest sibling reached for a pair of hedge clippers and …

The Devil Wore Prada… Or It Bank Robber in Devil’s Clothing?

The Devil Wore Prada… Or It Bank Robber in Devil’s Clothing?

When most people think of bank robbers, their minds wander to people in ski-masks who carry big guns.

But in Newport Beach, the most recent bank heist was pulled off by a clean-cut man who was sporting Prada sunglasses.  (If he can afford Prada, maybe he doesn't need to rob a bank... or maybe this isn't his first heist.) Authorities also say he didn't appear to have any sort of weapons with him when he decided to hold the Wells Fargo branch up.

The story goes something like this.  The mid 20-something walked in to the bank, cased the joint, turned …

Police Not Sold That Uber Has Reduced DUIs, But Have They?

Rideshare apps are all the rage these days, but despite claims by one company that they've helped take a bite out of DUI arrests, police say they're not exactly buying it.

The LAPD has confirmed that there are fewer DUI arrests in the city since these personal drivers started making their rounds, and yes, the numbers have dwindled since Uber and Lyft arrived on the scene in 2012, but there could be other reasons for the trend.

Increased driver education could be one of them.  Or, perhaps the public is starting to think more before getting behind the wheel of a …

San Bernardino Jail Escapee In Trouble Again

A man who is accused of killing a retired school teacher after busting out of the San Bernardino County Jail is also accused of trying to bust out of a detention facility in Contra Costa County, as well.

Prosecutors say that Darnell Washington actually tried to create an escape tunnel out of his Martinez Jail cell window and even started to tie sheets together to use during his run for the hills.

This marks the third escape attempt for the man.  He had one failed escape in San Bernardino County as well, prosecutors said, but he was captured before he could …

Theiving Jedi In Hot Water For Stealing Star Wars Memorabilia

Just in time for Comi-Con...
An 18 year-old Riverside man could soon find himself booked at the Riverside County Jail now that officers believe he'd run off with someone else's swag.

The man was initially questioned in the downtown area by members of the gang unit.   After a few minutes, they discovered a bunch of (likely valuable) Star Wars memorabilia on him.

Although he tried his best to convince police that he'd "found" the items, the force in the young man was not strong enough to pull the lie off.

Detectives said he hardly seemed credible, so they confiscated collector cards, a poster …

Orange County Jails Help Feed The Less Fortunate

When you think about the county lock up, you're likely to think about things such as crime, bail bonds and people who are serving time.  But now, at least one of the Orange County Jails has started to give back to the community.

Namely, they're turning over excess lunch meat (and other food stuffs) to the St. Francis Home and the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center.

There is quite a bit of food that's prepared for inmates on a daily basis, according to a representative from the Theo Lacy Jail, and not all of it gets used.

And now, instead of tossing …

Grand Theft Cheese Bus? It Happened In NorCal

Authorities in Northern California have said they've arrested two men who literally made off with the cheddar.

Suspects Ryan Monaco and Brian Lancaster are believed to be connected to a crime that took place last weekend.  Basically, the pair is accused of commandeering Tillamook cheese vehicles from an area parking lot.

And once the thefts took place, the media, and social media fans of the beloved brand, made sure the news went viral.

Authorities think the suspects stole a pick up truck and a trailer that contained three microbuses, all of which were part of a cheese transport caravan.  The vehicles stopped …
