Voters To Weigh In On Controversial Bail Reform Law

On Nov. 4, a controversial ballot measure that could potentially remove the right to bail bonds for certain, pretrial inmates in New Jersey will be brought to the state's voters.

Backers of the proposed law say it will allow the state to keep the alleged "worst of the worst" behind bars until their cases are over.  Ultimately, if passed, the new law would allow the state to prohibit those who have been accused of the most serious crimes from hiring a bondsman.

Current law grants all pretrial defendants the right to post bail; if voters give the bill a nod, the …

Things To Remember If A Friend Gets Arrested

There are few things more shocking than getting late night, "this is my one phone call" message from a friend or roommate.  On one hand you're trying to gather your thoughts so you can think straight.  On the other, the news that this person has been arrested and taken to jail can leave you feeling completely head spun.

Passed Out Drunk Driver Caught With Weapons, Drugs

Most criminals try to do their best to avoid the long arm of the law, but that seems not to be the case in Northern California.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department say an alleged drunk driver has been booked at the Bryant Street Jail after police responded to call about him being passed out in his car.

Officers drove out to the intersection of Fullerton and 40th Avenue and arrived just before midnight.  Witnesses said they'd seen the car swerving about neighborhood streets; they suspected whoever was driving it had a few too many to drink.

Police found the …

Mail Thief Tries To Evade Police By Feigning Sleep

A lot of times, when a criminal realizes the police are on their tail, they make a run for it.  They sprint through yards, hop fences, but they rarely (if ever) stop drop and snore.

But this week, the Santa Monica Police Department said they arrested an alleged letter-snatcher after he did just that.  Mail theft is a very big deal, they said, and a suspect can't just sleep things off and pretend like the crime didn't happen.

Officers said they were tipped off about the letter burglar earlier last month.  The caller said someone had been pilfering things from their …

There are times when people call our office because they are on the fence about posting bail bonds.

Top Three Things That Will Affect Your Bail Amount

Several years ago our company received a call from an older gentleman who wanted to bail out his son and his daughter in law.  His son's bail was set much higher than the wife's was, and the caller wanted to know if the jail went easier on her because she was a mom.

We explained to him that's not quite how things work.  Although a person's age, gender and whether they donate their time to coach the local youth soccer league have no impact on a person's bail amount there are three key things that do.

The type of crime they've …

New Bail Scam Hits San Diego County

At this point, it seems like every time you turn around con artists have come up with another bail bonds scam.

Earlier this year, law enforcement agencies on the East Coast were tipped off that unsavory individuals were pretending to be calling on behalf of the sheriff's or police department, telling whoever happened to answer that if they didn't buy bail bonds by phone right then and there, an arrest warrant would be issued in their name.

Although a similar version of this ploy has been making its rounds throughout the nation the latest seems to involve bail bonds at the …

‘Mission Impossible’ Burglary Suspect Booked At Orange County Jail

A representative from the Pomona Police Department have confirmed that officers have arrested a man who is believed to be the "Mission Impossible" burglar.

Although the suspect was initially booked in at the Huntington Beach Jail he's since been transferred to the Orange County Jail where he's being held on burglary charges; he's also facing one count of committing another crime while out on a community release program from a prior offense.

Jailers have not said what the previous crime relates to, but they did say the second charge has a no bail hold. If that's lifted when he goes to …

ATM Theft Via Forklift? It Almost Happened In Florida

Earlier this year, a Pennsylvania man was arrested after he stole a bulldozer with the intention of selling it to a scrap yard.  He was arrested and eventually booked into a local jail pending bail bonds.

Florida officials, though, say they're still on the lookout for a suspect who managed to make off with a fork lift.  If anyone has any information on who this is or where sheriff's deputies can find them, they're apparently all ears.

Authorities say the 10,000 pound piece of construction machinery was not only stolen from a construction yard, the thief then drove it about a …

Are Jails Overcrowded Because Of Greedy Bail Bondsmen?

If bail industry opponents were to have their way they'd have everyone convinced that jail crowding could be solved by getting rid of the commercial bail bonds industry.

As they tell it, the root of the problem is that getting out of jail is too expensive for a lot of people and their inability to pay is what's causing the whole mess.

On the surface the argument seems to have a bit of merit, but when you take a minute and start to peel back all of the layers you'll quickly see the claim is false.  Jail populations aren't growing because …
