At this point, it seems like every time you turn around con artists have come up with another bail bonds scam.

Earlier this year, law enforcement agencies on the East Coast were tipped off that unsavory individuals were pretending to be calling on behalf of the sheriff's or police department, telling whoever happened to answer that if they didn't buy bail bonds by phone right then and there, an arrest warrant would be issued in their name.

Although a similar version of this ploy has been making its rounds throughout the nation the latest seems to involve bail bonds at the Escondido jail.

A spokesperson for the Escondido Police Department has confirmed they've received information that an unknown person is calling around asking people to bail them out of the EPD slammer.  The real kicker, according to officers, is the department doesn't have a city-based detention facility.

Anyone who is arrested by one of these officers is instead taken to one of the San Diego jails to be booked and processed.

The number of people who say they were fooled, or nearly fooled is apparently growing.

Each call seems to have a number of similarities, according to a department spokesperson, which leads them to believe the incidents are related.  It begins with someone pretending to be a friend or family member who has gotten themselves into trouble; from there they begin to cry and beg for help.

The EPD is warning residents to not give out any personal information over the phone.  If you do receive this type of call and think it could be legitimate, call the Escondido Police Department,  Vista Jail or a trusted bail bondsman to confirm whether you have a loved one who has been taken into custody.
