A representative from the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department said that deputies have arrested and detained a French Camp man who is believed to have murdered his wife.

The incident took place last Friday night.  That is when authorities say 37-year old Juan Valdez shot and killed his wife.  The couple did have children, they said, although it is currently unclear whether any of them witnessed the crime.  A department dispatcher said a call reportedly came in late Friday afternoon regarding a potential domestic disturbance.  That is when a second call came in, indicating shots may have been fired.

Neighbors say they were shocked and sadden to learn such a violent incident took place in what they describe as being a quiet and safe neighborhood.  Defendant Valdez has since been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail and is being charged with murder.  The couple's children are in the custody of family members.

Bail information for Mr. Valdez was not immediately available, although it is likely to have been set in excess of $1 million.  If he, a friend, or family member wants to hire a local bondsman to help the defendant obtain a pretrial release, their cost would be $100,000, or 10%.  The person who cosigns the paperwork would not be eligible for no collateral bail bonds based on the size of the bond.

Valdez is scheduled to be arraigned later this week.
