Most car thieves will agree that speed is of the essence. This is not just important in terms of the getaway, it's especially important during the time the vehicle is being stolen.
An elderly Australian man apparently forgot this rule when he robbed a woman at knife point and attempted to jack her car.
Authorities were able to nab the thief because he was too slow in placing his walker into the trunk.
Queensland Police reportedly said the incident took place in the parking lot of a local retail store. The man is said to have entered the establishment to buy a knife. He then returned to the parking lot and approached a 22 year-old woman. He showed her the weapon as she was backing out of a parking space. He demanded she exit the vehicle.
The woman complied. The thief then walked toward the back of the vehicle, popped the trunk and placed his walker inside. He stopped a few moments later in order to load additional bags into the back seat. Law enforcement personnel said they were able to capture him a short distance away. The suspect said his plan was to escape to an undisclosed location in South Australia. It is currently unclear whether he has a history of arrest or if this was a lone incident. Officers believe he acted alone.
The victim is said to have been shaken, but not physically injured. The elderly man has been charged with armed robbery and was booked into the local jail. He is scheduled to appear in court later this week.
One Queensland police officer described the incident as being very bizarre.
