A spokesperson for the San Diego Unified School District has confirmed that SDUSD has received an armored vehicle thanks to military surplus program.

The tank, which is not unlike military vehicles that have been used in the middle east during the Iraq War, is able to drive through barricades and can also withstand explosives.

SWAT teams throughout the US often use similar types of armored cars and are able to acquire them through an "Excess property program" that's run by the Department of Defense.  Ultimately, it provides unneeded military equipment to law enforcement agencies at zero cost.

Representatives from SBUSD say the vehicle will be helpful if the district ever encounters a mass campus threat or an active shooter situation and it's sole use will be as a rescue vehicle.

It could also be deployed if they need to pull children from a classroom after an earthquake.

Although this is not the first San Diego Police department that has received equipment from the Department of Defense, this is the most expensive thing that has made its way into the county.

Sources within the district say their only cost to acquire the $730,000 vehicle will be $5,000, which is how much it will cost to ship it from its current location to San Diego.
