Sources within the San Diego Police Department say the prime suspect in an armed robbery was captured outside the SDPD headquarters.

Earlier this week a Chula Vista store employee approached a man in the parking lot. There was reason to believe he had stolen a handful of things from the store.

The suspect brandished a gun and proceeded to load himself and his wheelchair into a van.

The police were notified and spotted the vehicle getting onto the northbound lanes of Interstate 805.  Officers tried to stop him, but he refused to pull over.

The pursuit continued into the streets of downtown San Diego, which is when members of the SDPD decided to set up spike strips.   The strips flattened out the van's tires but the suspect refused to stop the van.

Ultimately, the vehicle came to a stop in a parking lot outside the San Diego Police HQ.

Sources say officers saw the man loading the handgun with bullets and they believed he had more than one firearm in his possession.

The suspect then exited the van, they said, but he failed to listen to officers' orders.  A police canine was used to help take him down.

He's been booked into the San Diego Central Jail where he's being held pending bail bonds.
