FBI And US Attorney Look Into Alleged SDPD Misconduct

The San Diego Police Department is the latest law enforcement agency that has come under scrutiny of federal officials.

The US attorney's office and FBI have announced they'll be launching a criminal investigation into alleged incidents of officer misconduct, and the Department of Justice will be reviewing additional cases as well.

The SDPD was launched into the national spotlight several years ago when now former officer Anthony Arevalos  was convicted on charges relating to trading sexual favors during traffic stops in exchange for turning a blind eye to DUI and other vehicle code violations.

A second round of allegations came last month, …

Research Shows Climate Changes Can Impact Crime Rates

Lots of things are blamed on the weather and particularly on climate changes: rising seas, increasing average temperatures and changes in the rainfall patterns.

Research shows that even slight rises in temperature can affect the behavior of people.

Environmental economist Matthew Ranson has predicted that the rising temperatures in the US will result in an additional 180,000 rape cases, 22,000 murders and more than a million burglaries and other crimes throughout the rest of this century.

Those numbers are based on the existing crime data and projections for changes in temperature that are widely accepted in the scientific community.

Ranson also says that …

Pasadena PD To Turn Over Police Shooting Investigations To LASD

The Pasadena Police Department Chief of Police said he feels the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is the most qualified agency to investigate officer-involved shootings (OIS), and that he intends to pass that baton effective immediately.

Not only will this help increase transparency, he said, it will also help ward off the idea that the fox is watching over the proverbial hen house.

What's more, he said, is the sheriff's department does not charge a fee for this service.  And the sheriff's department said they're simply there handle the criminal investigation portion …

Inmate Smackdown At The Jail Formerly Known For Choreographed Dance

A Philippine jail that had previously gained notoriety for it's dancing inmates has said it's now setting its sights on producing world-class boxers.

It all started late last year when a former amateur boxer-turned-felon reportedly asked jail officials if they'd consider building a boxing ring.  Sure, the flash-mob style dance choreography was fun for some, but it wasn't for everyone.

He said a growing number of inmates realized they too wanted to find a productive way to spend their time.  Sports, he said, was their answer.

What Not To Do: Visiting A Jail While On The Lam Will Get You Arrested

What Not To Do: Visiting A Jail While On The Lam Will Get You Arrested

You would think if a person was aware they had outstanding arrest warrants, making a voluntary trip to county jail would be at the bottom of their to-do list.

But alas, criminals don't always make a smart-decisions list and check it twice, and when they don't, they often find themselves in trouble.

That's exactly what happened last week, when two people involved in shooting a FOX television pilot visited the Cook County Jail.

The first man, 52-year old James Suhajda, was found to have a decades old warrant stemming from an old domestic violence arrest.  The other man, whose name has not …

Court Begins To Hear Evidence On Usage Of Jailhouse Informants

Court Begins To Hear Evidence On Usage Of Jailhouse Informants

Attorneys allege the use of jailhouse informants has violated their clients' Constitutional rights
Law enforcement agencies throughout the United States have used sentenced inmates to help get information on pre-trial detainees.

The primary challenge in the Orange County jails, however, is how those informants are being used.  Some defense attorneys have alleged they're starting to cross a line.

One public defender has reportedly said that authorities are having sentenced inmates interrogate suspects- which is a huge no-no.  Not only that, but when the matter goes to court, prosecutors have allegedly been hiding the inappropriate tactics.

Although it's still too soon to tell how …

Lamborghini Super Cruiser To Be Added To LAPD Fleet

It's safe to say the LAPD's new Lamborghini Gallardo is the most expensive vehicle in the department's fleet.

Although the vehicle is not off-the-lot new; it was donated by a generous citizen, a department spokesperson said they're thrilled to have it in their garage.

It's already been painted and logo graphics with the words protect-and-serve have already been affixed to the doors.

But for those hoping to see the LAPD's sports car patrolling the streets- you're out of luck.

Stockton Police Square Off With NFL Players In Charity Game

Pro football players from the San Francisco 49'ers and the Oakland Raiders traveled to the Delta College Gym last weekend to shoot some hoops with members of the Stockton Police Department.

It was all in the name of charity, they said, and all the funds raised that night will benefit the Stockton PD Youth  Activities League.  The nonprofit group is run by volunteer police officers and it helps sponsor programs aimed toward providing local youth with valuable life skills.

The organization was founded in the mid 1970s, they said, and donations make up a large chunk of their budget.

An anonymous donor …

Strange Arrests of Famous Musicians

It is not so unusual to hear of a celebrity being arrested for one offense or another.

But sometimes we just have to scratch are head in wonder when they get into trouble with the law...
Dylan: Trespassing
Bob Dylan has an unmistakable voice, but his looks can leave him looking unfamiliar to even the biggest fans.

In 2009, while touring in New Jersey with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, Dylan decided to go out into the neighborhood for some fresh air.

Some of the residents, though, did not recognize him for the celebrity he is and called police to report the appearance of …

Doing More With Less- Sonoma County Jails Trying To Make Due

Doing More With Less- Sonoma County Jails Trying To Make Due

You might say their problems started several years ago when budget cuts prevented the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department from hiring new jail staff.

You could also say the problem was magnified after the state started shifting certain prisoners from their facilities to county jails.

Regardless as to when things started,  the outcome was predictable.

Jail staff numbers are reportedly declining while the inmate population is rising.  Many deputies are retiring or leaving the department, they said, and the Sonoma County Jail has had a heck of a time finding qualified replacements.
