A spokesperson for the Livermore Police Department has confirmed that Chief Steve Sweeney will be retiring this March. Sweeney has been with the department since 1984. He was promoted to the position of Chief in 2007.
Mayor John Marchand said the police department's history of excellence can be directly attributed to Sweeney's leadership. Many say they feel privileged to have worked with a man who served the community with such high caliber.
Sweeny joined the force as a patrol officer but was quickly promoted to serve on the department's SWAT team. He later became a detective, sergeant and lieutenant. Sweeny also served as captain before his promotion to the role of chief.
His last day is reported to be on March 29. City officials have not yet selected his replacement.
Sweeny has long stressed the commitment of the Livermore PD to enhance the quality of life for citizens and their guests, noting the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect. These goals, he said, are made possible through collaborative problem solving and open communication between officers, civilian staff and community members. Further, they implemented the Citizen's Academy and Youth Academy in order to better connect with all age groups.
He is hopeful that his replacement will continue to strive to make the city a desirable place to live, work and play.
