LAPD Officers Being Trained To Use Gunshot Wound Trauma Kits

LAPD Officers Being Trained To Use Gunshot Wound Trauma Kits

In a day and age where mass shooting incidents are becoming more and more common, the LAPD wants its officers to be prepared.

Officers are often the first ones to the scene, they said, and if an adult or a minor child is in need of medical attention, there's a chance paramedics won't be able to treat them until the area is secured.

This is why officers are being trained to use combat-style trauma kits.

These kits will not only contain your every day first aid items; they will also include things such as tourniquets and compression bandages, which are used to …

Looking Inside The LAPD Command Post

The Los Angeles Police Department Real Time Crime Analysis and Response (RACR) center is a living, breathing, 24-hour a day command post.

The unit operates at a location near the edge of downtown and it's a way for officers to keep an eye on crime and police placement throughout the city.   If an emergency situation takes place at an area mall, RACR can track all calls relating to the incident and can pinpoint where the nearest patrol cars are.

If a terrorist incident happens overseas, employees can watch the event in real time on network television and can dispatch local LAPD …

It’s Not Just Alcohol: Drugging And Driving

Ever know anyone who has told you that they're just high, not drunk? It's ok because they drive better....

This New Years Eve the Los Angeles Police Department will be armed with more than just a breathalyzer...

A new high-tech swab test is allowing members of the LAPD to detect drivers who are driving drugged.

The department said submitting to the test is completely voluntary, and could be the best alternative to DUI blood tests.

Officers say the text can be completed in a matter of minutes and is being touted as a simpler, more effective and easier way to determine whether someone …

LAPD Wants To Take Guns From Persons Arrested For Domestic Violence

LAPD Wants To Take Guns From Persons Arrested For Domestic Violence

Members of the Los Angeles Police Department have confirmed they're rolling out a new gun policy when it comes to domestic violence offenders.  Namely, the City Attorney's office will be notified every time a person who is a suspect in this type of case has a registered firearm.

But it doesn't stop there.

The City Attorney said he will start to prosecute domestic suspects, or anyone who has an active restraining order, when they try to buy a gun.

Victim advocates say this type of action is long overdue- especially when you consider that nine women die in this country every week …

LAPD Eyes Electric Motorcycles
Just about everyone is going green these days, and the LAPD is no exception.

The department is currently working with Scotts Valley-based Zero Motorcycles and is weighing whether to add a few new bikes to its fleet.

The company is already partnered with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state, and feels the LAPD could benefit from going green.

The 67 horsepower bikes can travel up to 100 highway or 171 city miles before losing their charge and could save the Los Angeles Police Department tens of thousands of dollars in gas expenses over their lifetime.

They're much lighter and …

LAPD Combats Burglaries Via Zombie Apocalypse

Members of the Los Angeles Police Department say they are committed to training to combat crime, even if it means creating a zombie apocalypse.

The LAPD Northeast Division has recently produced a training video in which a mob of electronics-hungry zombies terrorize the streets as they smash-and-grab items from cars.

These walking dead aren't after brains, according to department sources, but are instead hankering to steal iPhones, iPads and any other high-ticket item they can get their decaying hands on.

When LAPD officers arrive on the scene they're stoked to be able to take out the undead.  Instead of grabbing for their …

LAPD To Test Body Cameras

A spokesperson within the Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed the LAPD will begin testing 60 body cameras, starting today.

The program is designed to help increase accountability among officers and to help reduce the number of complaints by community members.   The department's public information officer said that the LAPD will be testing two different types of devices that are being loaned to them.

Sources say that cameras from Taser International and Coban International are both being considered.  The LAPD will make its final determination after a 90 day test period and at that time, will decide which company they want …

USC Campus Ramps Up Security

Representatives at the University of Southern California (USC) have confirmed the campus is taking steps to ramp up security.

This, according to campus officials, is linked to gunfire that took place this time last year after a Halloween party.   Since that time, campus perimeter gates have been closed after dark and an additional law enforcement presence has been added.

Proponents of this change also point out that two graduate students were shot and killed in their car in an area not far from the school.

Undergraduate students said they had been wary about whether they'd be safe on the University's grounds, but …

LAPD To Test Drive Electric Motorcycles

In years past, LAPD patrol officers have most commonly been seen driving BMW motorcycles, Harley-Davidsons or the standard police cruiser.  Now, sources inside the department say they have started to test two different flavors of electric motorcycles.

They're more lightweight than their Harley and BMW counterparts. They are also more eco-friendly and are significantly lighter.  Officers say these bikes have been specifically designed for use by those in law enforcement.  The added bonus, they point out, is that these devices cost about $1 per day to charge.

All current price of gas considered, this can equate to tens, if not hundreds …

Mayor Eric Garcetti Says He Will Shake Up LAPD Civilian Panel

The new mayor of Los Angeles says he wants to make some changes to the civilian panel of the LAPD.

At the current time, crime is down, and this is this is the first time in more than a decade that the LAPD is operating without federal oversight.

The shake up entails adding four new members to the committee.

The first of which was one of Mayor Eric Garcetti's most fervent supporters during his campaign.  This man, real estate developer Steve Soboroff, has been named as the first selection.

The three other new members will reportedly include former journalist Paula Madison, law professor …
