Members of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) are asking for the public's help. A murder took place at the 2012 Bay to Breakers race, they said, and they need assistance in solving the year-old murder.
The incident unfolded on May 20, 2012 at approximately 5 p.m. It was at that time that 30 year-old Stephen Parten was assaulted in Golden Gate Park. The incident took place several hours after the annual footrace had concluded. A spokesperson for the SDPD said that Martin and his friends were wearing troll costumes at the time. He and his friends began to argue with another group of men. The argument is believed to have been related to a cellular phone. At some point an unknown man punched Martin. The victim fell to the ground and hit his head. The blow knocked him unconscious.
Several of his friends tried to assist him but were unsuccessful. Someone called 9-1-1. First responders transported the man to a local hospital. He died approximately 10 days later. Investigators are continuing to go over photos and other evidence but they are asking for the public's help. The suspect was reportedly last seen with several friends who were all wearing a 49ers jersey, the said. They were with a group of women who were dressed in purple. Anyone who believes they might have information regarding the assailant is asked to call the department's homicide unit.
