Holiday travel can be as hectic as it is stressful, but if you take the time to make a mental note of these five tips, you're bound to come out ahead of the game.

1. Be careful what is in your suitcase

Each year, bail bonds companies get countless calls from airline passengers who didn't know they were carrying "contraband" in their carry-on suitcases.

Things such as pocket knives, brass knuckles can be flagged as weapons by the TSA. Oddly, some we've had calls from people who literally didn't know they had a hand gun in a carry-on.

If a passenger is found trying to bring one of these items through a security checkpoint, they could find themselves in very hot water and in need of bail bonds.

2. Watch for travel alerts

This could be everything from severe weather to civil unrest situations which are currently being seen in many areas of the country due to ongoing protests.  Be sure to check the forecast and news reports along your route.

3.  Be prepared for an emergency

If you plan on traveling overseas, familiarize yourself with the local laws.

Japan bans certain types of antihistamines; in Italy, travelers can be cited for eating near public buildings.

It's always best to know what the laws are before you arrive at your destination so you don't find yourself in a position where you get arrested while traveling abroad.

You'll also want to make sure you have the contact information for the nearest embassy or consulate in case you have an emergency.

4. Make copies of your travel documents

It is always a good idea to have a spare copy of airline, hotel or other types of travel itineraries.  Make sure your loved ones know where you are traveling, when you will arrive and when you plan on checking in.

5. Keep strong tabs on passports, ID cards and credit cards

Identity theft continues to be a big problem in many areas of the globe.  When you travel, be sure to keep you identifying information in a safe place.

Keep your travel enjoyable and safe!
