Riverside County is the fourth-largest county in California, both in size and population. It is one of the fastest growing counties in the country. The Riverside Sheriff's Department serves across 7,300 square miles and 17 of the 27 cities within the county.
The Riverside Sheriff's Department is the second-largest in the State of California. It oversees five correctional facilities, administers Coroner- Public Administrator duties, and provides court services in Riverside County.
The RCSD services much of the region and has ten Sheriff's Stations across the area to aid sheriff's deputies in covering the entire county. Several of the cities in Riverside County are contracted with the Sheriff's Office to provide law enforcement services to their community.
The essential duties of sheriff deputies in Riverside County can include patrolling assigned areas, conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations, appear and testify in court, serve civil and criminal papers, prepare daily activity reports, guard, control and supervise inmates, and plan and implement crime prevention programs in the community.
The Riverside Sheriff's Department also has several specialized units and bureaus including RAID for the prevention of vehicle theft, Aviation to provide air support for patrol operations and search and rescue, CATCH to help combat computer-related crimes and task forces for both drugs and gangs.
There are also special units for sexual assault and sex offender monitoring; a unit that enforces off-highway vehicle restrictions; a hazardous device team that is trained to handle explosive devices; and a K9 unit that provides support to patrol operations, suspect apprehensions and evidence location.
