On the afternoon of April 21, Jeffery Thomas Smith pulled his recreational vehicle over on the shoulder of a California highway when he pinned a 59-year-old Temecula man between the RV and the man's car. Smith was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and was arrested. The Poway resident was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of felony drunken driving causing injury and, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department website, is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, with an arraignment scheduled for April 23.

The unnamed man was flown by helicopter to the hospital after sustaining major injuries in the incident, CNS reported.

The injured man, whose name was not released, was the side of the eastbound lanes of State Route 76 near Oceanside. He was reportedly rearranging some items in his car when Smith pulled up behind him in a 2002 Hurricane Motorhome.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt, the Temecula man noticed the motor home and asked his wife, whose name is also withheld, to "keep an eye on the RV from the passenger seat because it was close behind."

The woman reportedly soon felt the impact of the 34-foot RV hitting the back of the car when the motor home lurched forward, and her husband was pinned between the two vehicles causing him to suffer major injuries, CNS reported. The injured man was taken to Palomar Medical center. There is, as of yet, no report on the current condition of the Temecula man. His wife was not hurt during the incident.

According to Bettencourt, the crash remained under investigation.
