Chief Lamine Secka is among several candidates being considered for the job

The interim Chief of Police for the San Diego State University Police Department has big ideas.

iChief Lamine Secka has been with the department since 2005, but he's a 22-year veteran of the force.  Most of his career, he said has involved working with higher education police departments throughout the state.

Secka, who is just about done finishing up a masters degree in homeland security, said his vision for the campus police department includes a 10 year plan.

The two key components as the SDSUPD moves toward the future includes adapting to the needs of faculty, staff and students and embracing new technology that will allow them to do their job in a more efficient manner.

Secka, who is a candidate to become the permanent chief of police said he's seen how the campus has changed in the past eight years.

Not only does he know where they've been, he said, he has a pretty good idea as to where things are heading in the future.

Using social media to solve crime

In the current day and age, criminals from throughout the United States are being captured using open source intelligence.

This includes everything from Instagram photos, to twitter posts to Facebook status updates.

Secka said social media helps officers create a countywide presence and can even help with predictive policing efforts.

The iChief said working in a campus environment is different from working in a city police department because officers need to wear many different hats.

One minute, they could be responding to a serious crime and just 10 minutes later they need to run off to give a presentation on campus safety.

Secka is one of several candidates being considered for the permanent chief position.  SDSU is reportedly expected to make a final decision by the end of the week.
