A San Diego police detective is facing DUI charges after he was involved in a traffic accident while off duty. ABC News reported that police gang detective Jeffrey Blackford is scheduled to be arraigned on two misdemeanor DUI counts February 20, at which time he must report for the booking process. Blackford is an 11-year member of the San Diego Police Department.

Blackford was reportedly driving an undercover police car when he drove into a utility box in the early morning hours of December 7 near the 7300 block of Princess View Drive in the Allied Gardens neighborhood of San Diego. The injuries he sustained in the accident required medical attention.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the accident occurred around 1 a.m. and left both the vehicle and the AT&T utility box badly damaged. The officer is being charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and one count of having a measurable amount of alcohol in his system while driving.

If convicted on the charges, Blackford faces four days to six months in jail as well as other civil penalties. The Tribune reported that he is currently on administrative duty as an internal investigation remains underway.

Lieutenant Andra Brown said the police department policy states that employees should “refrain from operating a department vehicle after having consumed alcoholic beverages.” The same policy prohibits employees from operating city cars any time their ability to drive has been impaired by drugs or alcohol.
