On January 26, an officer from the San Diego Police Department was involved in a shooting in the Mira Mesa neighborhood, according to CBS. The incident left one man injured with non-life-threatening injures from the gunshot wound.
Police responded to a domestic violence call around 8:40 p.m. when they encountered the man near the 8800 block of Scorpius Way. It was reported that a woman placed the call after she was allegedly attacked by her husband who was also threatening to attack police officers so they would shoot him.
San Diego police officer Mike Cali said that when officers arrived, the suspect walked towards them in the street with an unidentified object in his hand. According to CBS, the officers ordered him to drop the object but instead, the suspect raised the object over his head and uttered threats towards the officers.
When the suspect continued with his threats, the man was struck with a stun gun initiated by the officers on the scene. Police said the man seemed unaffected by the taser and allegedly turned around and walked toward the house where the call had originated, ABC News reported.
When officers became worried that the man would injure the woman who had placed the call, two shots were fired by police, striking the suspect in the leg. The man then dropped the object he had been holding in his hands, reportedly a rock. According to ABC, the man was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital and treated for his gun shot wound.
No officers were injured in the incident and the officer who fired the shots is reportedly a 12-year veteran of the department. The San Diego police homicide detectives were investigating the incident. According to ABC, after completing their investigation, authorities believe the man who was wounded was attempting suicide by cop. It has not been stated whether or not the man will face criminal charges.
