A mother will face time at the San Diego jail after she was seen by neighbors dragging her mother into a burning home, which she is believed to have ignited. The San Diego Sheriff's Department said the 41-year old woman has been hospitalized, detained and will be booked into jail once she recovered from her injuries, according to NBC.
The fire started in the single-story home in Lakeside around 4:30 p.m. January 1, the article stated. Dispatchers told fire officials that the fire had been deliberately set by a resident, and when sheriff deputies arrived on scene, the 74-year-old mother told them her daughter started the fire.
Deputies will book the daughter, Neomi Rodriguez into the Las Colinas Detention Facility and faces charges of arson, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and attempting to prevent a victim from contacting police. She remains at the hospital but will be transported to the jail when she is released from the hospital. Rodriguez and her mother did not sustain serious or life-threatening injuries from the fire, NBC reported.
Court records show that the mother and daughter have a tumultuous relationship, the article stated. The mother filed a domestic abuse case against Rodriguez last August. Rodriguez also has faced three misdemeanor drug violations in the last two years, to which she has pleaded guilty to. She has driven on a suspended or revoked license and resisted arrest.
CBS reported firefighters were able to extinguish the home fire within 20 minutes of arriving on scene. Investigators said Rodriguez began the fire in one of the home's bedrooms, and when the mother tried to escape, the daughter allegedly repeatedly tried to drag her back into the home.
