A 23-year-old woman taken into custody and booked at the Las Colinas Jail faces grand theft charges after being accused of taking a 2-year-old French bulldog named Mozzy from a downtown business.
Dyan Chavez was allegedly caught by video surveillance coaxing Mozzy from a local loan office, Rate Rabbit Home Loans, on Front Street on Monday, December 3. San Diego CBS affiliate KFMB reported that Mozzy was spotted by "good Samaritan" Sandro Fernandez.
Fernandez reportedly called the San Diego Police Department when he saw Chavez and an SUV that matched descriptions of the one seen at the loan office.
"I was at the Dollar Store earlier and I saw her," Fernandez told ABC affiliate KGTV. "She came in with the dog in her hands and I recognized it right away because I saw the video earlier on the news and then we followed her to Food 4 Less and we saw the car that she had and it matched the video."
KGTV reporters interviewed Chavez's family to gain a sense of motive. David, Chavez's brother, reportedly defended his sister, telling the news source that she never intended to keep the animal. A local breeder detailed that French bulldogs can bring in a price as high as $15,000. Jeff Vuytowecz, Mozzy's owner, revealed that he paid $3,000 for the dog.
"I just want to thank everyone," Vuytowecz told KGTV. "I really appreciate the cooperation from everybody and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of people."
The newspaper indicated that Chavez faces burglary and receiving stolen property charges in addition to grand theft, and was held on $25,000 bail.
