The daughter of a wanted Mexican drug lord pleaded not guilty to an immigration charge after being arrested in early October and taken to a San Diego jail.

Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman Salazar, who U.S. officials say is the daughter of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, head of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, was charged with document fraud, making false statements to federal authorities and for identity theft. She was caught allegedly trying to enter the country at San Diego's San Ysidro port of entry, The Associated Press reported. She handed over a Mexican passport and U.S. visa that belonged to someone else.

At a hearing held October 25, Guzman Salazar pleaded not guilty to her charges and waived her right to seek bail. A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for November 30, the article stated.

The Sinaloa cartel controls drug trafficking along the majority of the U.S. and Mexican border. A Fox News Latino article said the  significance of the arrest would depend on how much information the daughter would tell authorities about her father.

"We don't know exactly what she knows," said David Shirk, director of the University of San Diego's Trans-Border Institute, who was quoted in the article. "It may just be an interesting factoid in the war on drugs or it could be a vital clue for law enforcement."
