A San Diego man appeared in federal court October 25 for an arraignment on child pornography charges, but is also being tied to a bomb plot in New York City. Howard Willie Carter II previously pleaded not guilty to the three pornography charges, NY1 News reported.
Federal authorities believe Carter - who is being held in a San Diego jail - aided in the plot to bomb the Federal Reserve building in Lower Manhattan, the news source said, after they discovered he had been communicating with Quazi Nafis, who has been charged in the bomb plot.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently raided Carter's apartment in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, NBC reported. Carter has also gone by "Yaqueen" - a name that has been identified as a co-conspirator of Nafis.
The New York Times reported the FBI discovered 1,000 incriminating images and three video files on a laptop and hard drive in trash found near his apartment. Emails addressed to "Yaqueen" were also found on the computer.
Authorities began surveilling Carter in August, the NY Times reported. The FBI waited until Nafis was arrested for the bomb plot to arrest Carter. Nafis came to the United States in January on a student visa and tried to recruit people for a terrorist group, the article stated.
