A San Diego police officer shot and wounded a man October 14 after the man pointed a military-style assault rifle in his direction, The Associated Press reported.

The San Diego Police Department responded to a call stating that the 24-year-old suspect, Esteban Nandin, was wandering around an apartment building. He was wearing a tactical vest, the article stated, and he engaged in a standoff with the officer that lasted an hour. After he pointed the gun at the officer, he was struck in the chest and arm, according to Lt. Jorge Duran. The name of the police officer who shot Nandin has not been released.

A day after the incident, authorities identified the man as an active-duty sailor in the U.S. Navy, U-T San Diego reported. Nandin is stationed at Coronado Naval Amphibious Base and has been living in San Diego about four years. His father said he has completed tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Nandin's father also said he has no idea what led to the standoff at the apartment building with the police officer.

The U-T article also stated Nandin lived in the building where the incident took place. In addition to the assault rifle and tactical vest, Nandin was wearing a gas mask and carrying a handgun. When San Diego police arrived at the building, they immediately found him in a stairwell that led to the lobby to the garage. Nandin was shot after raising his rifle while only two or three feet away from the San Diego police officer.

Although officers ordered Nandin to come out of the stairwell after the shooting occurred, he stayed for nearly an hour before exiting a side door of the building, repeatedly ignoring police officers' orders for him to stop. Medics treated him on scene and then Nadin underwent surgery.

Duran told the U-T he believes Nandin was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting.
