A Riverside woman who was held at the Las Colinas Detention Facility on $2.1 million bail since her arrest last summer was due in court for a preliminary hearing February 21. The woman, Elizabeth Masters, faces several felony charges, including embezzlement by an employee, grand theft, theft by false pretenses, forger and willfully filing a false tax return, CBS affiliate KFMB reported.
According to KFMB, Masters was fired from her employer in December 2011 after they discovered she forged more than 700 company payroll checks and deposited them into her personal bank account. She allegedly embezzled nearly $6 million in the nine years she was employed at PROformance Apparel, based in San Marcos. Reports said she allegedly used the money to buy a horse ranch in Aguanga, California.
Masters was arrested in June after she allegedly attempted to avoid fraud charges by fleeing to New Mexico. She was later returned to California and arrested by the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
Since the embezzlement was reported by her former employer, she returned about $500,000 by selling different parts of the ranch including equipment and animals.
The judge overseeing the preliminary hearing will determine if there's enough evidence against Masters to bring it to trial, the source reported.
Armed robber holds up restaurant, asked for job minutes earlier
Across the county, the San Diego Sheriff's Department was called after a man robbed a burger restaurant in the early morning hours of February 21.
According to KFMB, the man asked for a job before he robbed the Rally's on Jamacha Road in Spring Valley at around 1:30 a.m. He sat in the drive-thru during his first trip to the restaurant when employees reportedly told him to come back the next day to inquire about a job. The man then drove away and returned a few minutes later.
He had a gun on his return trip to the restaurant and was able to flee the scene with an unspecified amount of cash. KFMB said no one was injured in the incident.
