Sources at the UC San Diego campus have confirmed the university has named a new police chief.

David Rose officially took the helm yesterday, according to a UCSD Police Department spokesperson.  He succeeds former chief Orville King who retired last week.

The campus chancellor said he feels Rose was an excellent choice to fill the role.  Not only does he have extensive law enforcement experience, he's already well familiar with the campus.   Why? Because he's been working in the field of on campus safety since he studied there as an undergrad.

That was more than 30 years ago.

Ultimately, members of the UCSD campus police and faculty feel he's going to do a tremendous job.

Rose began his career by first working as a dispatcher and community service officer.  From there, he worked his way up the ranks and eventually became a sworn officer.  In 2009, he was promoted to the role of captain.

The new chief has also helped out with a number of on-campus high profile events and has worked with the security teams for former president Bill Clinton, the Dalai Lama and countless elected officials from throughout the globe.

The UC San Diego Police Department is described as being among the most technological advanced campus law enforcement agencies in all of California.

In his new role, Rose will oversee the management of responses to campus emergencies, developing and furthering partnerships with students and staff and overseeing all police functions on the La Jolla campus.
