LASD Jailers Found Guilty On All Counts, Face Jail Time

A half dozen former and current Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies who were accused of trying to thwart a federal investigation have been found guilty in a court of law.

Each had been charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy for their part in trying to hide a jail inmate who had been working with the FBI.  They were even accused of trying to intimate a federal agent.

A spokesperson for the court said that while the final sentence won't be handed down for a few weeks, each of the named defendants is facing up to 15 years behind bars.

Two of …

Race To Replace Lee Baca Continues Amidst Corruption Trial

Primary election takes place this week
On Tuesday, the seven-candidate pool of men who are vying for the position of Los Angeles County Sheriff will likely be cut down to two.

Unless, of course, one of them garners more than 50 percent of the popular vote.  In that case all bets will be off, and the new leader of the LASD will be announced.

This is the first time in more than a decade that Baca's name isn't on the ballot.  Although many believed he'd toss his hat into the ring for a fifth term, things changed quickly after a handful of …

Los Angeles Sheriffs Race Heats Up At First Debate

A total of seven men are vying for the job formerly held by now-retired LASD Sheriff Lee Baca, and each is making a strong case as to why they're the best one to lead the department.

The first debate took place last week, and the six attending candidates had strong opinions as to who was responsible for department mismanagement and who would best help the LASD recover from a recent flurry of scandals.

The resonant tone for the night seemed to be one of reform-  why it's needed and why each one felt they were the most qualified man for the …

Big Brother is watching.

A public information record request shows the San Jose Police Department, LAPD,  LASD and San Diego Police Department are  among those who use StingRay.

Although no one will say exactly how it works, it's believed that cellphone tracking is being used to thwart terrorist plans and to disrupt terrorist networks.

Mounted Police Used To Chase Down Pimps

Mounted patrol pimp sweep helps clean up Compton
It's probably safe to say a crop of recently arrested Compton pimps never thought they'd be chased down by cops on horseback- but it happened.

Sure, there are many officers who prefer to patrol their beats in cars, on motorcycles and even on segway scooters, but others say riding a horse suits them just fine.

Although some will argue the practice is a little bit dated, others point out that mounted patrol units have their advantages.
Old-school policing models have value
Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies point out that horses can do things that motorcycles and …

Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell picks up another key endorsement

McDonnell worked alongside him during his tenure at the department, he said, and he feels his skills, knowledge of the county and decades of experience will serve the department well.

He also believes McDonnell is the right candidate to help turn the department around.

The LBPD Chief announced his bid for the seat in mid-January, shortly after now-retired LASD Sheriff  Lee Baca announced his early retirement.

OC Undersheriff To Lead Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

When LASD Sheriff Lee Baca announced his retirement, John Scott wasn't on his short-list of interim replacements.  Baca was hopeful Assistant Sheriff Terri McDonald would get the job.

But once the LA County Board of Supervisors learned she lacked the proper credentials, they set their sights on someone else.

That search, according a source within that office, led them south of the county line, right to the doorstep of Orange County Undersheriff John Scott.

Scott is no stranger to the LASD.   In fact, he served as the department’s chief of custody operations for a number of years before making the move to …

Long Beach Police Chief Not A Shoe-In For LASD Sheriff

Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell may have a long list of supporters in his bid to become the next LA County Sheriff, but that's not to say he's guaranteed to win the race.

Political analysts are saying he's by no means a shoe-in, and the winner in the upcoming election will need to have name recognition, community outreach and a deep-pocketed campaign.

This is the first time the seat has come open in a very long time, they said, and that's bound to make for an interesting race.

In fact, the last time the field was this open was in 1998. …
