Holiday Food Baskets Passed Out By LASD Sheriff Lee Baca

In 2013, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department partnered with Viking Charities to help families in need.

On Dec. 22,  Sheriff Lee Baca and other members of the LASD traveled to the Santa Monica Airport to pass out food baskets.  The goal was simple-  to provide holiday meal items to those who would otherwise have gone without.

The baskets reportedly included turkey and other traditional holiday items and Viking Charities said more than 1,500 recipient families were honored.   The foundation has partnered with the sheriff's department for more than 30 years, they said, and both feel it's a great way to do …

LASD Deputies Found Liable In Jail Beating

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has once again found itself in hot water.

Last week, a seven person jury found several LASD deputies liable for using excessive force. The case was filed in response to a 2008 incident that took place at the downtown Men's Central Jail.

At the time the incident took place, the accused are said to have called inmates out of their cells in order to have them searched for weapons and other contraband.  For unknown reasons, 21 detainees refused.

From there, the LASD deputies Tazed and beat them until they lost consciousness.   A total of nineteen men sustained …

LASD Sheriff Held Fiscally Liable For Inmate Abuse

LASD Sheriff Lee Baca has been found to be personally liable for instances of inmate abuse that took place at the LA County Jail.

This, according to sources close to the case, means Baca may need to shell out upward of $100,000 of his own monies in order to settle the case.   The LASD is reportedly appalled by the decision and have said they intend to appeal the ruling.

The Department further notes this is the first time a Sheriff has been held personally liable in this type of case.

The case originated in late 2010 after a Men's Central Jail inmate …

LA Men’s Central Jail To Be Demolished

The LA County Board of Supervisors has come to an agreement with regard to the demolition of Men's Central Jail.  They have not set a firm timeline that outlines any of the specifics.

One thing is for certain.  More information is needed.  A consultant has been hired to determine whether the current inmate population can be safely reduced.  If there are not any viable alternatives to incarceration a replacement jail will need to be built.

This could cost taxpayers millions. The LA County Sheriff's Department estimates the price tag could span upward of $1.67 billion.  The supervisors said they need to …

LASD Deputies Allege Undocumented Inmate Abuse

Members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department who were once part of a jail gang intelligence unit have filed a lawsuit against the LASD.  The suit alleges that after they filed findings that "named names", and outed sworn personnel that were involved in illegal activity, they were harassed.   Their attorneys feel these deputies were maliciously prosecuted for doing their job.

Both LA County Sheriff Lee Baca and former Undersheriff Paul Tanka were among the suit's listed defendants.  Plaintiffs Michael Rathbun and James Sexton have further alleged the LASD hid a jail informant in order to prevent him from working with …

Supervisors Consider $22M To Help LASD Could Restore Patrols

The LA County Board of Supervisors is considering allocating $22 million to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. If the measure passes, Sheriff Lee Baca will use those funds to restore patrols to certain unincorporated areas.

Places within the county that do not have their own police departments receive law enforcement services from the LASD.  At the current time those residents reportedly have a 17 percent longer wait for in terms of having a deputy respond to the 9-1-1 calls.  Although that 17 percent increase translates into about 60 seconds, some point out that extra minute could mean the difference between …
