Passed Out Drunk Driver Caught With Weapons, Drugs

Most criminals try to do their best to avoid the long arm of the law, but that seems not to be the case in Northern California.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department say an alleged drunk driver has been booked at the Bryant Street Jail after police responded to call about him being passed out in his car.

Officers drove out to the intersection of Fullerton and 40th Avenue and arrived just before midnight.  Witnesses said they'd seen the car swerving about neighborhood streets; they suspected whoever was driving it had a few too many to drink.

Police found the …

Diversion Programs Cause A Major Drop In San Francisco Jail Population

Counties throughout California say their jails are feeling the squeeze of realignment-  and most are dealing with the problem of too many inmates and not enough beds.

But that's not the case in San Francisco, whose jails are boasting record-low populations.  At current, they're operating at just 51 percent capacity.

Those numbers are so low, according to the sheriff, that the San Francisco County Jail has one of the lowest inmate populations of anywhere in the country.
On decline since 2009
It all started a few years back when the county started placing more weight on diversion programs and supervised release.  More than …

A spokesperson for the San Francisco County Jail has confirmed they are detaining the area's latest serial bank robber.

That man, Gerardo Lopez, had been dubbed the Bad Beard Bandid by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) due to the unattractive fake beard he wore during the heists.

The bandit is believed to be responsible for recent holdups in Ripon, Manteca, Sunnyvale, Capitola, Tracy, San Jose and Dublin.  His streak, according to investigators, began in late November and ran through Feb. 25 of this year.

Authorities have not said how much money he got away with during his bank robbery …

Crime Fighting Plans Discussed By SFPD

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department has said that steps will be taken in 2013 to lessen the number of violent crimes in the current year from levels reported in the previous 12 months.

Criminal activity has been a problem throughout the Bay Area, he said, agreeing that more needed to be done to increase safety on city and neighborhood streets.  Murder rates were up last year, having reached their highest level since 2006.  Crimes against property, such as burglary, also spiked by 40%.  Some have cited a belief that these rates could be directly linked to the …

San Francisco Jails Ordered To Pay Settlement In Strip Search Lawsuit

The San Francisco jails have been ordered to pay more than $450,000 to settle a 10-year old lawsuit.  The suit was initially filed by Mary Bull after she was subject to what she feels was cruel and unusual punishment for consistently failing to sign a consent form agreeing to allow officers conduct a strip search.   Bull was taken into custody alongside other anti-war demonstrators in late 2002 and booked into the Bryant Street jail.  Records indicated she was charged with vandalism.  Bail information for her crime was not immediately available.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department said the recent playoff game between the 49ers and Green Bay Packers kept them on their toes.  Officers said the home team's divisional playoff victory sparked widespread alcohol induced celebrations.
