As the San Diego Police Department continues its attempt at cracking down on pedestrian fatalities and citations, they haven't had the most positive results. According to San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV, a 58-year old man was sent to a San Diego hospital after he was struck by a pickup truck on March 9 at 54th Street and Westover Place.
Police department officials told the source the driver was heading northbound and hit the victim when he walked into the roadway. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for a broken femur. San Diego police Officer David Stafford said it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash, however, the department will still conduct an investigation to determine what happened.
Another accident victim was discovered that same night by an officer driving down University Avenue in City Heights. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, witnesses say they saw a white two-door sedal hit the man and continued to drive eastbound. San Diego Police Department officials are treating the incident as a likely hit-and-run incident.
There has been a significant increase in the amount of people getting injured or killed by vehicles while walking through San Diego neighborhoods, which is why the police department has been looking into ways to reduce these types of situations. According to the San Diego Union-Times, the police department officials wrote up 328 pedestrians for jaywalking violations on March 7. The officers wrote the citations between 7 a.m. and midnight to pedestrians who were disobeying the traffic safety laws. In addition, the officers issued tickets to 12 bicyclists and 30 motorists.
