Community members throughout San Diego gathered in Riverside February 13 to honor 34-year-old Michael Crain, who was allegedly killed by the rogue ex-Los Angeles police officer Chris Dorner. According to San Diego ABC affiliate KABC, Crain, an 11-year veteran of the department, and another officer stopped at a red light during a routine patrol February 7 moments before Dorner ambushed them and fired at them using a rifle.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Crain was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton and served two tours of duty in Kuwait. Crain will leavehis wife, 10-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter behind.
After a deadly shootout February 12 in Big Bear, California, police found a charred body in a cabin located within the resort town. According to Fox News, police are not sure whether the body is Dorner's yet, however, they are beginning forensic tests as soon as possible to identify the body.
The San Francisco Police Department was searching for Dorner for the past week, and it is believed that four people have died as the result of his rage. Prior to this discovery, authorities were offering a $1 million award after they discovered Dorner's burned truck on a road near Big Bear Lake, along with several of his personal belongings.
After stealing a truck from a local resident, Dorner fled to a cabin prior to shooting and killing a San Bernardino County deputy and wounding another. Police officers tossed smoke devices inside the cabin, which caused the building to catch on fire. Cindy Bachman, a spokeswoman for the the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, told the media that police don't believe the person who was in the building prior to the fire was able to escape.
She told the source that authorities believe there is a body in the building, however, they aren't sure if is is safe to enter the cabin yet. Authorities determined Dorner was in the Big Bear Lake area after they discovered his manifesto, which detailed why he was on his rampage as well as what he was planning to do.In the letter, Dorner stated he did not fear for his future, according to Fox News.
"Self Preservation is no longer important to me," the manifesto stated. "I do not fear death as I died long ago."
