On March 6, San Diego Police Department officials arrested 16 people in the Cherokee Point area of the City Heights neighborhood for operating a meth lab. According to NBC San Diego, the police entered the home acting on a search warrant and found a large amount of methamphetamine.
Fox affiliate KSWB reported the officers had to call in the SWAT team for backup after they discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb on the property. However, they were later able to determine it wasn't an explosive device.
Linus Harth, one of the neighbors told the police the house was deemed the neighborhood "party house," as there was always a steady traffic of people coming and going. He told the source the home was rented like an open-door hotel, NBC San Diego reported.
"I've dealt with the cluster of people coming and going down here, which everyone in this area is familiar with who lives here and who doesn't," Harth said, according to the source. "Occasionally that has meant we've come down to the mailbox and have to deal with strangers with hostile looks."
What the arrests will do for the community
San Diego police Lt. Kevin Hubbs said that the arrests will make a large dent in the methamphetamine distribution taking place in the community.
Since the arrests, another neighbor told Fox affiliate KSWB the neighborhood has been much more peaceful and there's been a stronger sense of safety. He told the police he wasn't surprised by the raid and that he is happy law enforcement did something about it.
"Things have gotten crazier, more people, and frankly, a lot of hostile people, so I'm really happy they're not here right now," the neighbor said.
