A video camera captured footage of a San Diego police officer pulling a woman's hair outside her burning home October 19, sparking an internal investigation into the incident, the San Diego Union-Times reported.
A reporter for Imperial Beach Patch was at the scene of the fire and was shooting a video, which shows Officer Dan McLaughlin pulling Torazzi Hayslett from firefighters who were trying to keep her away from the fire, the article stated. McLaughlin carried Hayslett away from the home, as she fought with him, grabbed on to a fire truck and slapped him in the face twice. The woman's husband then carried her to the middle of the street, at which point McLaughlin stepped toward Hayslett and grabbed her hair, dragging her several feet.
Lt. Andra Crown told the U-T that the San Diego Police Department is investigating the incident, but because it is an internal matter, could not comment further.
Hayslett also told the news source she is in the process of hiring an attorney and believes McLaughlin overreacted.
"My husband had me the whole time," she said, according to the U-T. "'I'm like 110 pounds on a good day."
The fire at the woman's home caused an estimated $400,000 in damages. By the time firefighters arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the fire had reached the second floor of the house, the U-T reported. The cause of the fire is also under investigation.
The U-T reported McLaughlin used "unreasonable force" in a 2009 incident with a man. A jury found the officer guilty of injuring John David Ross, an advocate for the homeless, during an encounter on a sidewalk. The jury awarded Ross about $4,000 in damages.
