Fate Of Marshmallow Fight Participants Remains Sticky

What started out in 1985 as "friendly fire" between neighbors has since grown into the largest marshmallow fight in the western United States.

The annual 4th of July marshmallow fight has gotten so big, according to local residents, that it's turning Ocean Beach into a great big hot and sticky mess.  But this year, the San Diego Police Department will be on the lookout for would-be candy tossers- and those who break the rules could find themselves in hot water.

Last year, several people were hurt and nearly 2,400 pounds of trash needed to be collected off sidewalks, streets and the …

Man Gets Run Over By Daughter When He Tries To Stop Drunk Driving

A 37 year-old woman remains behind bars this morning on charges that she backed over, and killed her father when he tried to prevent her from driving drunk.

Police say the now defendant, Soukvilay Barton, had been drinking with family members at her parents house last weekend.  At some point in the evening she decided to head home, but her father didn't want her driving while she was under the influence.

He even went so far as to follow her out to the driveway as she was getting into her car.  When that didn't work he stood directly behind her vehicle …

El Cajon Police Say Fake Gun Was Used To Rob Gun Shop

If you're sitting there scratching your head after reading the title to this post, you're certainly not alone.

But yes, a spokesperson for the El Cajon Police Department has confirmed a fake gun was used to hold up the Hiram's Guns and Spirits store.  (Yes, you read that correctly; the store sell guns and booze and their Yelp reviews are hilarious.)

Anyway.

So officers have said that last Saturday afternoon three masked suspects made their way into the store, smashed a display case and ran off with a handful of real firearms.

The three men then hopped inside a red sedan and sped …

LAPD’s Volunteer Bike Patrol Is Coming To The Valley

Members of the Los Angeles Police Department said they're starting to think outside the box when it comes to making the northwestern San Fernando Valley a bit safer.

To do that, they said, they're putting together a volunteer civilian bike patrol.

Participants will need to provide their own bikes but they will be given matching uniforms.  Although they won't be able to do things like make arrests or write tickets, they will be extra eyes and ears on the ground.

The LAPD said each volunteer will undergo about a week of training and officers will help teach them what to look for …

You’ll Pay to Be Arrested – Guilty or Not

As if the whole process of getting arrested isn't bad enough, Chicago is testing a plan that requires every person who is arrested to pay for their trip to lock up.

One city village passed a measure that requires anyone who is booked and charged with a crime write a $30 check payable to the city (even if they are later found not guilty).

This is less about offsetting costs for detention services, according to a recent report.  Instead, it's a (hairbrained?) fundraising tool that elected officials hope will offset a nearly $340 million budget deficit.

As long as people keep taking …

The Governor, The Supreme Court And The CA Jails Problem

The latest round of litigation in the California jail realignment program relates to the state wanting to move disabled offenders back into state prisons.

Jails were never designed to hold inmates for more than 12 months at a time and because of that, their facilities are far more limited than those that were built to house people for years at a time.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, maybe we should start at the beginning.

Several years back the US Supreme Court ordered the vastly overcrowded CA prisons to cut their population in a very big way.  In theory it was …

California Teens Arrested For “Ballin Too Hard”

Every now and again you'll hear a story about someone getting arrested for something really really silly- like stealing a pack of gum or on a warrant for an old unpaid parking tickets.

But in the case of these two Bay Area teenagers, they figured, if they were going to do something illegal, they were sure as heck going to go big or go home.

It all started last Saturday when 19 year-old friends Nhima Kahsay and Mohannad Halaweh used a fraudulently obtained credit card to rent a McLaren sports car.

At some point, though, the dealership reported it stolen.  That's when …

Grand Theft Search For Love Becomes Search For Bail

A man in Southwest Pennsylvania found himself in pretty hot water last week after he stole a firetruck to impress a girl.  But the middle-aged man who may have been searching for love has instead found himself searching bail bonds.

It all started when 46 year-old Randy Davis started spending time with a friend who works as a volunteer fireman.   Police think that's how the man figured out how to get into the building and where the firetruck's keys were stored.

To Davis, it probably seemed like a harmless joyride.  He and his lady friend snuck into the building, unplugged the …

Police Say This Driver Took “DOA” To New Levels

Michigan police say they're still trying to figure out what they're going do with a man who was so determined to finish his road trip, that he failed to call a coroner after one of his passengers kicked the bucket.

The driver, a 62 year-old man from the Detroit Area said he and his elderly mom were returning from Arizona for the winter.  The third passenger in the vehicle, he said was a woman half his age who he was reportedly involved with romantically.

But back to the story.

It all started last weekend when the younger woman checked herself out  of …

LAPD Urges HS Grads To Stay Safe, Sober

It's that time of year again.

This month, it's believed more than 27,000 senior high school students from throughout the city will celebrate their 12th grade graduation.

And for many, when this type of milestone achievement is reached, there's a certain amount of celebrating that goes along with it.  This is why the LAPD has teamed up with the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) for their 16th annual Safe and Sober Graduation Operation.

Using alcohol to enhance a celebration is ill advised, they said, with the most obvious problem being the fact that graduating seniors fall short of the legal drinking …
