LA Jail Project Kisses $80 Million In State Funding Good Bye

LA Jail Project Kisses $80 Million In State Funding Good Bye

Los Angeles County has long wanted to break ground on a women's jail project, but recent chatter out of Sacramento indicates their bid for $80 million in grant funding has been shot down.

Local detentions officials have long-hoped to construct a 1,600-bed facility at the Mira Loma Detention Center site.  In order to do that, they said, they'd use $100 million in state grant funding they received last year but would still need another $80 million this year in order to get the project off the ground.

The additional funds had reportedly been earmarked to construct facilities geared toward providing vocational …

3 Strange Arguments That Lead to Arrests in 2013

We all get into lively “discussions” with friends, family and loved ones from time to time.

A heated argument can quickly spiral into something that does physical damage. And that’s when the police have to get involved.

Some of the most ridiculous arguments can end with an arrest, for one or both parties involved.

Here are three 2013 cases of a rabid discussion ending in handcuffs and a ride to the police station:
Don’t Scratch!
On February 19, 2013, Ronald Howard, 30, and his girlfriend Shalamar Petrarca, 25, were getting ready to eat dinner when an argument between the two started over the proper …

Environmentally Friendly And Emmision Free

LAPD Eyes Electric Motorcycles
Just about everyone is going green these days, and the LAPD is no exception.

The department is currently working with Scotts Valley-based Zero Motorcycles and is weighing whether to add a few new bikes to its fleet.

The company is already partnered with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state, and feels the LAPD could benefit from going green.

The 67 horsepower bikes can travel up to 100 highway or 171 city miles before losing their charge and could save the Los Angeles Police Department tens of thousands of dollars in gas expenses over their lifetime.

They're much lighter and …

Ladies: These Unusual Laws Are for You

There are so many unusual laws out there.

And we just know that it’s because someone (often times a man) has done something that made it necessary to enact a law to stop it.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t laws that are geared specifically to the ladies.
What you can, can’t and must wear
What lady doesn’t love a sassy pair of heels?

Well, check the law books before you bring them out of the closet, because in some cities like Carmel California, you must have a (free) permit to wear them inside the city limits.

The law was enacted to prevent people who …

One Officer, One Year – 100 DUI Arrests And Counting

San Rafael PD Officer Hits 2013 Milestone
Officer Kevin MacDougald has a message for would-be drunk drivers:  if you get behind the wheel of a car, you will be caught.

MacDougald just made his 100th DUI arrest this year, according to San Rafael Police Department records, and he's showing no signs of slowing down.   To put this into greater perspective, his arrests account for about a third of the total DUI arrests made by the department in 2013.

Officer MacDougald said he does it because he likes it and because he takes pride in keeping streets safe.   One of his most …

Can You Spare $40 Million? San Joaquin County Seeks Funding For New Jail

San Joaquin officials have asked the state if it can spare $40 million in grant funding so the county can build a new jail.

The reason for the pitch relates to the ever-aging Honor Farm facility, which is antiquated and out of date.   If construction does move forward the new jail will also provide programs geared toward helping inmates reintegrate into society.

These programs, according to those close to the project, are designed to reduce recidivism rates and keep former offenders on the straight and narrow.

California has reportedly pledged to grant $500 million to counties to help upgrade, expand and/or build …

When 20 Minutes = Five Cents + 15 Hours In Jail

A Georgia man is little charged up about spending 15 hours in jail for plugging his electric car into a public outlet at his son's tennis practice.

Some say the officers' decision sets a dangerous precedent, especially considering how many of us charge our cell phones while on the go.

The story began when the Atlanta-based dad was waiting outside his son's school to pick him up from tennis practice.

Dad had some time to burn, and the car needed some juice.  The school had an outlet on one of the outside walls and he decided to plug the vehicle in.

That's when …

How To Get Arrested: Man Butt Dials Intended Victim While Plotting His Murder

A 68 year-old Arkansas man has found himself behind bars after butt-dialing the the person he intended to have killed.

Defendant Larry Barnett was completely unaware that he'd called the target victim from his back pocket, but man, did this guy get an earful.  Police records show the intended target listened in on the call for about an hour and a half.

Barnett not only provided a hit man an accurate description of the victim,  he also gave directions to the guy's house.

Suffice to say, he called police as soon as the call was over.   Police were reportedly told that Barnett …

Green Light Given To Monterey County Jail Construction

The Monterey County Jail has spent the past six years trying to get an expansion project approved.   The county has finally given the nearly $89 million project the final green light.

The jail said the extra bed space has been long needed, and that overcrowded conditions have been worsened since the state implemented its prisoner realignment program in 2011.   The county public works department has said the expansion will be the largest project the department has managed in quite some time.

Most of the project will be funded through state grant funding.  This is due in part to legislation that was …

Musick Jail Expansion Proponents Still Duking It Out With Irvine

Musick Jail Expansion Proponents Still Duking It Out With Irvine

When it comes to getting an approval for expansion of the James A. Musick Jail, both sides are coming at it gloves off.  The city of Irvine, however, has been knocked out in the latest round.

Elected officials were hoping their appeal to the Fourth District Court would quash the project, arguing it should have been reviewed under the California Environmental Quality Act.   The justices disagreed and have said at this point, Orange County has merely applied for state funding.  Construction, they said, is not yet moving forward.

Irvinians have long disputed the need to add bed space to the minimum …
