Criminal Magic

For most of us, magic is something you see at children’s parties and Vegas shows. We don’t generally see magic playing a large role in our daily lives.

So, when we hear of someone being arrested in connection with some “bad magic,” it can make us scratch our heads in wonder.

While the majority of Americans are skeptics when it comes to magic, there are some who give it a lot of credence. Many people in countries around the world still believe highly in the practice of witches, shamans and voodoo priests.

It is when those beliefs and practices take a dark …

Bondsman Charged With Attempted Murder For Shooting Bail Skip

Defendant is just one bad apple in a landscape of honest company owners
Although most bail bondsmen conduct business on the up and up, you'll occasionally hear a story about someone who goes rogue.

This is one of those stories.

A 33 year-old Alabama bondsman has been booked on attempted murder charges after allegedly a client because he didn't go to court.

McGiboney called a 21 year-old client last week saying he needed to come to his office.  His company was going to be on the hook for paying the man's bail forfeiture, he said, because the defendant never bothered to show up …

Police say it all started on Sunday night when officers took note of a man who was riding his bicycle without the property safety lights.

When they stopped the man to question him, Charles Fryer gave them his name, but quickly tossed the bike and made a run for it.   The suspect took cover in a few blocks over and was reportedly seen running from property to property.

Collect Calls From Jail No Longer Billed At An Arm & A Leg

Skyrocketing collect call prevented inmates from reaching their families
When someone is in jail, getting through friends and family members is a lifeline.

But unless you've ever received a call from an inmate, you probably didn't know that the companies who bill the people who receive these calls- often charge exorbitant rates.

The good news, according to inmate advocate groups, is that things have changed.

And it's all thanks to an elderly woman who complained to the Federal Communications Commission (FCCC) that it was too expensive to receive calls from her jailed grandson.

In the past, inmates' families have needed to shell out nearly …

Modesto Judge Sets Hearing Date for Bail Agent

Bail bondsmen wait for the phone to ring or wait for the client to walk into the office.

Bondsmen do not solicit business by showing up at the jail.

Authorities reportedly believe that bail agent Paveen Singh visited the Modesto jail under the guise of a private investigator in order to speak to gang members in order to ask them to commit the crimes on his behalf.

Such investigator visits to the jail are considered legal visits and were therefore unrecorded and unsupervised.

Judge Thomas Zeff of the Stanislaus County Superior Court has set a hearing date for accused Modesto bail agent Paveen …

Jailbreak For Valentines Day Date

Not Your Typical Valentine Break-up
An Arizona man is in hot water after breaking out of prison on Valentine's Day.

Inmate Joseph Dekenipp said the effort was all in the name of love.  During the escape, he sustained scrapes, cuts, bruises and is now facing additional charges- all because he wanted to see his girlfriend.

Corrections officials say the escape was quite the effort- especially since the detainee had to scale a tall fence and work his way through razor wire in order to make his way off the property.

The inmate and his girlfriend planned to meet at a saloon that was …

Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell picks up another key endorsement
Former LAPD Chief William Bratton has announced he's supporting Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell in the race for LA County Sheriff.

McDonnell worked alongside him during his tenure at the department, he said, and he feels his skills, knowledge of the county and decades of experience will serve the department well.

He also believes McDonnell is the right candidate to help turn the department around.

The LBPD Chief announced his bid for the seat in mid-January, shortly after now-retired LASD Sheriff  Lee Baca announced his early retirement.
