Monterey County Sheriff Talks About Recent Inmate Deaths, Jail Safety

Attorneys allege the jail is at fault for not providing timely medical care
Two Monterey County Jail inmates died earlier this month after not receiving prompt medical attention for what's been described as flu-like symptoms.

David Stevens, 58, was reportedly taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to the illness within the week.   The family attorney said Stevens told him he'd filled out several slips requesting to see a jail doctor.

Two weeks later, 33 year-old Jacob Parenti also died after not receiving prompt treatment.  His sister said his condition had gotten so bad that he'd started to cough up …

Man Arrested In ‘Atomic Wedgie’ Death

An Oklahoma man is reportedly in custody today after police arrested him for the death of his stepfather by pulling his underwear up and out of the back side of his pants and stretching it over his head, a move otherwise known as an 'atomic wedgie'.

Authorities said that 58 year-old Denver St. Clair died a short time later of asphyxiation and trauma to the head.

The incident initially started out as an argument; Brad Davis had invited his stepfather over for drinks but at some point the two got into a disagreement.  One thing quickly led to another and the …

Jail Inmates Give Back

Late last week, nearly one dozen Illinois inmates ventured outside their jail cells in order to give back to the community.  The Chicago suburbs have long dealt with burned down and abandoned homes, and in the upcoming weeks, Cook County detainees are helping to tear five of these eye-sores down.

Members of the sheriff's department are hoping to demo up to 100 area properties within the next 12 months through a new program that allows certain inmates to assist with these types of projects.  In order to be eligible, they must have been sentenced into the boot camp program.

As part …

A New York city resident has filed a lawsuit against the NYPD after he was detained for possession of a sweet substance.

Love Olatunjiojo was arrested earlier this year after he was stopped by officers, who discovered he had four colorful, crystal rocks on his person.  Those "rocks", he said, were still in their original wrappers that were clearly marked with the words Jolly Rancher Candy.

Regardless, Olatunjiojo was handcuffed, Mirandized, charged with possession of crystal methamphetamine and booked into a local jail.  He spent 24 hours in custody before being released.

The federal lawsuit points out that lab tests revealed the …

Dog The Bounty Hunter Stands Up For Wisconsin Bail Industry

Duane Chapman, AKA Dog the Bounty Hunter, is standing up for the Wisconsin bail bonds industry.

Until recently, Wisconsin was one of four states that had outlawed for-profit bail bonds.  Recent legislation seems to have overturned that ruling. Lawmakers may have decided to give reintroduction of the industry a trial run.

Bail bonding had been outlawed in the cheese state about 35 years ago.  It was at this time that judges in Milwaukee County were reportedly accepting gifts, trips and meals from an area bondsman. Some legislators still feel the industry is (more…)

Sesame Street Teaches Kids I Is For Incarceration

In the United States it is estimated that more than 2.7 million kids have parents that are serving time in state or federal prisons.

Corrections department officers said this reflects an 80% spike from numbers reported 20 years ago.

This, according to Sesame Street representatives, is why they are creating a production that is geared toward helping these children cope with a new series called "Little Children, Big Challenges".

Research shows that about one out of every 28 kids has a parent that is in jail. Some states say their incarceration rate is so high that nearly 10% of resident children have …

LMFAO: Courts Need More Than Webster’s New World

Webster's New World Dictionary has long been the go-to in terms of defining the meaning of words.  In recent years they have included new additions such as tweet and unfriend.

The courts have often had a difficult time keeping up with the ever-evolving English language.

This has left judges and lawyers scratching their heads.  That was the case, according to those working in the legal field, until they discovered Urban Dictionary.

Many dictionaries do not have entries for words such as twerking, which is defined as being the booty-shaking dance frequently used by Beyonce; or YOLO, an acronym which means You Only …
