Anyone who lived through the 1990s will remember the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ron Brown.   Their deaths became instant national news.  The trial of her ex-husband, former NFL player O.J. Simpson, was sensationalized.

A total of 11 attorneys represented Simpson during his 9-month trial.   More than 25 prosecuting attorneys within the District Attorney's office worked round-the-clock in hopes of getting a conviction.

Simpson quickly became the US' most famous criminal defendant.

The trial costs topped $20 million.  It racked up in excess of 50,000 pages of in-court transcripts.  Approximately 150 witnesses were called and the jury was sequestered for nine months.

These men and women spent so much time holed up in the Hotel Intercontinental, that the presiding judge sent them to Catalina Island and allowed them to go sightseeing on a Goodyear blimp.

The nation became obsessed with the trial.  A national poll determined that by the end of the case, 74% of adults could recognize Kato Kaelin, but less than 25% of citizens could identify the Vice President. Approximately 90% of television watchers reported tuning into the trial's conclusion and more than 140 million heard it on the radio.

Economists reportedly estimate national industries lost more than a quarter of a billion dollars in worker productivity between January and October of 2005.

A total of 19 news stations provided live coverage.  Two thousand journalists were assigned to cover the trial.  Representatives from nearly two dozen newspapers and magazines were present.   To date, more than 80 books have been published about what was dubbed as the trial of the century.

Some believe the media frenzy was due to Simpson's NFL career.  He retired in the late 1970s and stayed out of the limelight after that time.  Nicole Simpson had no idea who he was when they met and some members of the prosecuting team had never heard his name.

The District Attorney's office felt they had a strong case, even without a murder weapon.   They argued that Nicole put her kids to bed and responded to a knock at the front door.  That, they said, is when Simpson grabbed her and stabbed her repeatedly.  It was believed that Ron Goldman arrived to the home during the assault.    Prosecutors said Simpson's blood was found at the scene and in the driveway of his home.   They murder weapon was not located.

The defense argued Simpson was not physically capable of the murders, and that Goldman was young and strong.  Simpson, they said, suffered from chronic arthritis.

Nicole's sister provided testimony that Nicole was beaten and abused throughout their marriage.  She said O.J. was a violent man with a temper.

Prosecutors said that DNA evidence placed Simpson at the scene and that a glove found at O.J.'s house matched a hand print at scene of the crime.    Defense attorneys said the glove didn't fit and that "if it does not fit, you must acquit".

The verdict was rendered at 10 a.m. on October 3, 1995.   Simpson was found not guilty.    Jurors said they came to their conclusion after less than four hours of deliberation.  The judge delayed reading the decision until the following day.

The parents of Ron Goldman later sued Simpson civilly for wrongful death.   Simpson's children were awarded $12.6 million and the victims' families were awarded more than $33.5 million.

Simpson is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence for an unrelated crime.  His attorneys are trying to get that conviction overturned.
