A New York city resident has filed a lawsuit against the NYPD after he was detained for possession of a sweet substance.

Love Olatunjiojo was arrested earlier this year after he was stopped by officers, who discovered he had four colorful, crystal rocks on his person.  Those "rocks", he said, were still in their original wrappers that were clearly marked with the words Jolly Rancher Candy.

Regardless, Olatunjiojo was handcuffed, Mirandized, charged with possession of crystal methamphetamine and booked into a local jail.  He spent 24 hours in custody before being released.

The federal lawsuit points out that lab tests revealed the rocks were not meth, but were comprised of sugary compounds.  His attorneys have alleged the city violated their client's civil rights because the officers subjected him to an unreasonable search and seizure.

They further state Olatunjiojo suffered emotional trauma as a result of the experience and are seeking unspecified damages.

Legal experts have reportedly said this is not the NYPD has found itself in hot water for alleged civil rights violations.

In 2012 alone the department paid nearly $23 million to settle these types of lawsuits.  In one instance, a more than $100,000 sum was paid out after officers arrested a student for doodling on a desk.  In another instance, a defendant who had his head smashed into a windshield during his arrest.  He also received in excess of $100,000.

It is not yet clear when the current case will be brought to trial.
