Backlash for NYPD Twitter Campaign Spreads to LAPD

According to a recent report, an attempt to show more positive interaction between the NYPD and members of the community has suffered some serious backlash.

The department launched a twitter campaign encouraging citizens to share photos of themselves with members of the NYPD and using the hashtag #myNYPD on the social network.

Instead, what the city got was a lot of negative images of police officers wielding batons and arresting protestors. This including one of an 84-year old man allegedly beaten for jaywalking.

A lot of the images were from incidents in the past; none too recent. This attempt to rebrand the …

Lake County Jail Struggles To Deal With Overcrowding

Deputies at the Lake County Jail say they're still dealing with the growing pains brought on by the state's inmate realignment program.

The problem has become so big, according to sources, that earlier this month, a sheriff's department scanner overheard a deputy saying the jail was so busy that they had to place a temporary stop to new bookings.

This posed quite the challenge, especially since law enforcement had just detained a 25 year-old suspect.  At that point, it was 8:45 a.m.   Booking logs show the man, Jamie Flores, didn't start the booking process until noon.

The jail tells a slightly different …

Dutch Jails Say They Don’t Have Enough Inmates

Now this is a problem you don't generally hear about: especially since most jails throughout the globe are saying they're operating at overcapacity and there isn't any more room at the inn.

Dutch jails, however, say their inmate population has dwindled to the extent that there are now more guards than there are detainees.

On one hand, violent crime rates are falling, they said, but on the other, some have questioned whether jail sentences for violent offenders are a bit too light.

In the past six years, the county of more than 17 million had its inmate population drop from 15,000 to …

Inside the Old Salinas Jail

The old Monterey County jail in Salinas has been a big topic of discussion over the last few decades.

It has mostly been abandoned and in disrepair for the last 30 years and county officials have wondered what to do with the historic piece of architecture.

The old Salinas jail is well-known; it was where farm labor rights leader Cesar Chavez spent three weeks for refusing to stop a boycott against Bud Antle lettuce with fellow United Farm Workers in the 1970s.

Even during that period, the jail was in disgraceful shape. Chavez described it as being “poorly lit” and “very cold …

Federal Judge Sets Trial In Alleged SDPD Misconduct Case

Court will decide if SDPD engaged in systematic cover-up of wrongdoing
Convicted San Diego Police Officer Anthony Arrevalos is like a bad rash that just won't go away.

The former officer, who is currently serving a prison sentence stemming from an on-the-job sexual misconduct conviction may soon be back in court.

A federal judge has paved the way to allow a lawsuit to be brought against the local law enforcement agency, saying enough evidence has been brought forward to indicate the SDPD may have been knowingly involved in an ongoing, thoughtful cover-up of Arrevalos' behavior.

Although a trial date has been set for …

SDPD 9-1-1 Dispatcher Writes Tell-All Book

Book recounts instances of sometimes funny, sometimes outlandish and in some cases, tragic events
A now-retired member of the San Diego Police Department's 9-1-1 dispatch unit has penned a book highlighting some of her more memorable calls.

Although some, which involved helping parents deal with coming home to find a deceased child, were far much more tragic than others, in which people abused 9-1-1 to ask about silly things, like when the Chargers game was starting.

Author Lucia Tulumello worked in the dispatch unit for nearly two decades, according to sources within the department.  It's quite unusual for someone to have that …

Bad Beard Bandit Booked Into SF County Jail

A spokesperson for the San Francisco County Jail has confirmed they are detaining the area's latest serial bank robber.

That man, Gerardo Lopez, had been dubbed the Bad Beard Bandid by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) due to the unattractive fake beard he wore during the heists.

The bandit is believed to be responsible for recent holdups in Ripon, Manteca, Sunnyvale, Capitola, Tracy, San Jose and Dublin.  His streak, according to investigators, began in late November and ran through Feb. 25 of this year.

Authorities have not said how much money he got away with during his bank robbery …

Los Angeles Sheriffs Race Heats Up At First Debate

A total of seven men are vying for the job formerly held by now-retired LASD Sheriff Lee Baca, and each is making a strong case as to why they're the best one to lead the department.

The first debate took place last week, and the six attending candidates had strong opinions as to who was responsible for department mismanagement and who would best help the LASD recover from a recent flurry of scandals.

The resonant tone for the night seemed to be one of reform-  why it's needed and why each one felt they were the most qualified man for the …
