Marin County Jail Healthcare Costs Nearly 2x Local Average

For the most part, inmate healthcare costs at Bay Area jails runs about $8,000 per detainee, which is why Marin County Jail officials are trying to understand why they're paying close to twice that amount.

A recent grand jury report found that their county's detention facility is shelling out approximately $15,000 for each inmate.

The report was commissioned as a part of a follow up to a 2005 study on in-jail healthcare costs.

So what is a county to do?  Well, for starters, the grand jury is suggesting that quite a few bucks can be saved by contracting out certain segments to …

High-Tech Drones Give LAPD Additional Eyes In The Sky

For some, the LAPD's recent acquisition of two helicopter drones is quite the exciting event. Others, however, say it's a little too "Big Brother" for comfort.

The drones were a gift from the Seattle Police Department, according to sources, who had purchased them with federal grant funds.  Each is approximately three-feet wide, they said, and can be operated through the use of a remote control.

They are also outfitted with video cameras, which can help provide a birds-eye view of the areas the drones are patrolling.

Privacy rights advocates are worried that use of these types of devices will infringe upon the …

CHP Swaps Out Their Beamers For Hogs

It wasn't all that long ago that a number of law enforcement agencies started trading in their Harley Davidson motorcycles for a sleeker, sexier BMW model.

But now, it seems, at least one has decided to go back to the classic.

A Harley Davidson dealership in Northern California has confirmed they're building about 16 bikes per month for the California Highway Patrol, and they've delivered more than 100 hogs since winning the contract last year.

The dealership's manager said the CHP was very specific in terms of what it did and didn't want on the patrol bikes, and manager Mike Genthner said …

Long Beach Police Cite Dozens For Alcohol Violations During LB Pride

More than 60 people were cited by members of the Long Beach Police Department during last weekend's gay pride celebration for things ranging from being drunk in public to selling alcohol to minors.

For anyone who has ever attended the parade, or festival, it's quickly apparent that with the number of people in attendance, that it's pretty much a cluster.

But that's not to say that those who choose to break the law can assume they'll get away with it.

This year, the department partnered with investigators from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to make sure all the rules were …

Bondsmen Stepping Up When The Criminal Justice System Falls Short

Bondsmen Stepping Up When The Criminal Justice System Falls Short

A lot of times, when people think about bail bonds professionals they picture someone who could double as a used car salesman. And sure, thanks to Hollywood, that’s the primary image that’s put out there.

But that’s not exactly how things look in real life.

Not only does the commercial bail industry help save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars (we’ll get into that later) some bondsmen are being credited with helping track down and capturing the worst of the worst- and hand delivering them to the jail’s doorstep.
The benefits of bail bonds
When a person is arrested and hires a company …

Stanislaus Jail Employees Want To Carry Concealed Weapons Sans Permits

Stanislaus Jail Employees Want To Carry Concealed Weapons Sans Permits

For the most part, if a county allows residents to carry a concealed weapon, they'll need to go through a permitting process.

Stanislaus County Jail guards, however, feel they should be exempt from this rule.

A spokesperson said it's not like they're asking for special consideration.  State prison guards don't have to fill out stacks of paperwork and pay permitting fees, and neither do patrol deputies.

Sheriff's corrections deputies say they're simply asking for a level playing field.

The issue has become a central part of the reelection campaign for Sheriff Adam Christianson, who will face off against Deputy Tom Letras in the …

America’s Rap Sheet

If you watch the news you probably feel like the only news is bad news.

Every day, there are multiple reports of homicides, robberies, and rapes that are taking place across the country.

It seems like there is a crime epidemic, leaving most people to think that criminal activity must be at an all-time high these days.

While there is still a lot to worry about out there, it might surprise most people to know that this is not the most dangerous year, or even decade, in the U.S.

Man Who Sold Pot Brownies To School Kids Gets 3-Years

A Costa Mesa man who sold pot brownies to a local teenager has pled guilty to one count of selling marijuana to a minor and one count of furnishing marijuana to a minor.

The judge has sentenced him to 36 months behind bars.

Costa Mesa Police Department officers said all started last year after seven elementary school students became sick after unknowingly consuming some of the pot-laced treats.

A 12 year-old student had brought the brownie onto campus, according to police reports, and classmate shared it with the other students.  Six boys and one girl needed to be hospitalized as a result.

Inmate Says He Busted Out Of Jail Due To Loud Rap Music

Don't commit the crime if you can't do the time
An inmate who was serving a six and a half year sentence at a minimum security prison in the UK said "enough was enough", and that the constant playing of loud hip-hop music led is what prompted his jailbreak.

The music was driving him nuts, he said, and he was tired about being hounded by other inmates to buy drugs.

And eventually, when it got to the point that he was on his last very nerve, he decided to climb over a security wall and make a run for it.

Robert Stevens remained …

Bail Reform: Are the Talked About Costs Misleading?
Jails throughout the country are detaining more and more inmates and county governments are feeling an increased pinch when it comes to housing costs.

On one hand, the logic behind releasing inmates through pretrial services has some merit (on the surface, at least, but we'll get to that in a moment).

If the jails can identify low-level offenders that do not pose a risk to public safety, who haven't hired a bondsman, one might think there's a fiscal benefit in terms of letting them out on their own.

Not only would this save taxpayers a …
