Bail Bond Companies Get Creative In Catching Skips

You Can Run, But You Can Hide
In this day and age, you might need to provide a bondsman with more than a name, address and phone number if you want to get someone out of jail.

Bail bondsmen are becoming more and more savvy when it comes to tracking down skips.  Sure, the questions a defendant is asked during the bail bonds approval process can seem a bit odd, but there is in fact a method to the agent's madness.

Social media is often the key.  Asking for a person's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram info can seem a bit strange …

Top 10 Tips For Avoiding A Black Friday Arrest

Most everyone has heard tales of Black Friday shopping trips gone bad.  Getting a good deal is one thing- winding up in handcuffs due to, ahem, "aggressive shopping habits" is another.   Below are just a few quick tips to keep you out of of trouble.

1.  Don't run people over with your car.  A 71 year-old drunk driver was arrested a few years back after he mowed down a couple who was walking through a Walmart parking lot outside of Seattle.  The victims wound up needing medical attention, and the driver found himself in need of a bondsman.

2. Don't shoot …

Typhoon Offers Swim To Freedom

Philippine jailers never planned on adding an Olympic-sized swimming pool to the local detention center.

Unfortunately, the recent super typhoon not only took countless neighborhoods, it also smashed through the prison's main gate and flooded the premises.  This is bad news for corrections officers, who say that after the storm stuck, nearly 120 inmates swam their way to freedom.

Staff members said that as the tide began to rise, they were left with no other option than to allow inmates out of their cells in order to swim to higher ground.

Some took the honest option and fled to higher floors.  Others …

How Will Jails Deal With Inmates Who Can Live For 500 Years?

How Will Jails Deal With Inmates Who Can Live For 500 Years?

Jails think they're overcrowded now.  Just wait until scientists get us to a point where people can live for centuries.

So how will this change things moving forward?  On one hand, it puts the phrase "life in prison" into a whole new light. On the other hand, you can't help but wonder:  if someone is set to be locked up for a hundred years, is that enough time to rehabilitate them?

Or will prisoners be denied access to medical treatments and supplements that will help them extend their lives?

If a person doesn't age they will have had to be enhanced in …

The Good, Bad And Ugly Of CA’s Prisoner Realignment

It's been two years since Sacramento legislators implemented the CA prison realignment, and jails are still struggling to adapt to "the new normal".

It all started after a federal lawsuit alleged that conditions in state prisons were so overcrowded that inmates basic constitutional rights were being violated.   Judges agreed, and ordered the corrections department trim populations to more than 137.5% of rated capacity.

Since opening the doors and letting criminals free just wasn't an option, elected officials reportedly came up with a different plan.  Pass the buck to county jails.

Some have called the plan a necessary evil.  Others have equated it …

SDSU Police Crime Blotter
College campuses are not immune from unlawful activity.  Despite the academic bubble environment, instances of crime can strike on any day at any time.

Below are just a few examples of recent calls to the SDSU Police Department.

On Oct. 27, a student called into report a potential transient had been spotted near the Zura Residence hall.  The caller said they believed this person was holding a knife, which drew some concern.  Police say the transient was last seen collecting cans and wearing a cloth to cover their mouth.  He or she has not been spotted since.

The following …

Bondsmen Behaving Badly: Soliciting Inmates Is Illegal

Those who don't have a great deal of familiarity with the commercial bail industry are often surprised to learn how regulated it is.

In California, a bondsman can call an inmate's friends or family members to try to arrange bail bonds, but only if the inmate called them and requested they start the process.  Companies are also prohibited from "cold calling" people who have been arrested by scheduling visits at the jail.

Some companies have reportedly said the restriction violates their right to free speech.  But, as of this week, a CA appeals court ruled otherwise.

The current ban was implemented by …

Bondsman Accused Of Re-Jailing Clients After Taking Their Money

A New York-based bondsman has found himself in hot water for behaving badly.

In addition to sending clients back to jail without reason, court records allege George Zouvelos, charged them exorbitant fees for his services.

The shady bondsman landed on law enforcement radar last summer after he tossed more than a dozen bailed out defendants back in the big house for failing to make a weekly sign in appointment at his office.

Those appointments all took place on July 4, a day the office was closed for business.

Judges, law enforcement members and other licensed agents have said this is exactly the type of …

Can A Deal Be Reached To Reduce California Prison Overcrowding?

A source within the state legislature has confirmed that lawmakers have a plan to reduce over-crowed conditions within California's prisons.

As it stands, elected officials intend to request that the year-end deadline to trim an additional 10,000 inmates be extended.

Some believe the reduction could be safely reached through a variety of rehabilitation programs- but only if the state is (more…)

State Senate Rejects Plan To Send CA Prisoners To Private Facilities

Gov. Jerry Brown is still trying to figure out how to deal with the state's overcrowded prisoner population.

As it stands, California is under court order to trim an additional 9,600 detainees from its prisons before the end of the year.   Sheriffs departments from all over the state are calling this a bad and dangerous move.

The best of the worst have already had their sentences trimmed, they said, and releasing nearly 10,000 felons onto the street will have a huge impact on public safety.

Brown's most recent plan involved (more…)
