The morning of October 27, local authorities found a suspicious package outside the San Diego Central Jail in downtown San Diego.
A deputy of the San Diego Sheriff's Department found the package leaning on the entrance gate of the jail, located at 1173 Front Street, the article stated. The package was reported as a "suspicious device" at 9:54 a.m., according to a San Diego dispatcher cited by CNS News. The package prompted the bomb squad to investigate, and a fire engine and medic were also called to the scene.
However, it was discovered the package was a backpack filled with paper, the news source reported.
"The backpack contained only papers, said San Diego police officer Frank Cali, the CNS article stated.
Sheriff's officials reviewed video surveillance recordings of the jail entrance and saw a transient man take off his backpack and leave it in front of the jail on the ground. The man then walked away.
Authorities also closed down a portion of Front Street while the bomb squad investigated the backpack, and officers could not bring in new prisoners to the jail during that time, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.
