$500 million in state grant funding has been awarded to CA jails this year
The Santa Barbara Jail has confirmed the county has been awarded a $38.9 million state grant that will help them build a 228-bed wing on the yet-to-be-built North County Jail
That wing, they said, will reportedly provide programs aimed at helping reduce recidivism rates.
Jail officials say the funds were much needed- especially now that they're holding more inmates due to the state's prisoner realignment program. Not only will the money allow them to add bed space, it will also help provide programs designed to help offenders reintegrate to society.
Other state grant funding recipients include:
- Tuolumne County Jail officials received $20 million for a new, 198-bed pre-trial jail that will exercise yards, program service rooms and medical facilities.
- The Napa County Jail has been granted $13,474,000 for a brand new work furlough facility that will have four, Those 18-bed dorm rooms. Each will have counseling rooms and a job search room.
- Kings County Jail officials said they were granted $20 million to add a 24-bed mental health addition to their current jail. The addition will include vocational space and program rooms.
- The Shasta County Jail will receive $20 million to construct a 64-bed detention facility. The new jail will have medical screening capabilities, offer behavioral programs and will have an interview and counseling room.
- Lake County Jail officials will reportedly receive $20 million to build a 40-bed women's jail. This facility will also have a 39-bed medical and mental health services building.
- A Tehama County Jail spokesperson said they are slighted to receive $6.5 million in order to build a 64-bed detention facility that will have program space and a day reporting center.
- The Santa Cruz County Jail has announced they have been granted approximately $24,635,000 which will be used to build a 64-bed transitional housing unit. The unit will have vocational space and a dayroom.
- Solano County representatives said they will be receiving $23 million that has been earmarked for a programming facility that will offer vocational training, classrooms and space for mental health counseling services.
- Tulare County Jail spokespeople have confirmed they have been granted $40 million. Those monies will be used to replace their current men’s jai and reporting center. A new, 384-bed jail will be constructed.
- San Joaquin County Jail representatives said their plans to build a 384-bed jail with vocational space, interview rooms and a medical exam room has been approved. The state will be providing them $33.3 million to use toward construction costs.
- The San Mateo County will also receive $24,374,000 which have been earmarked for renovation projects at the Maguire Correctional Facility.
- Fresno County Jail representatives said they received the second largest grant, valued at $79,194,000. These monies will be used to replace the current South Annex with a new, 300-bed pod-style facility.
- Orange County Jail officials have confirmed they received the largest grant, valued at $80 million that will be used to construct a new 384-bed facility that will be part of the Musick Jail expansion.
- Lastly, Sacramento County has been awarded $56.4 million in grant funds that will be used to help build a 26-bed mental health and medical treatment facility.
