OC Sheriff Defends Use Of Jailhouse Informants

It wasn't all that long ago that OC defense attorneys had alleged that the county's use of jailhouse informants was a direct violation of their constitutional rights.

At that point, OC public defenders alleged that prosecutors were using sentenced inmates to interrogate pre-trial defendants and went so far as to claim the DA's office was hiding the inappropriate tactics.

But Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hurchens has stepped forward to defend the county prosecutor, saying that the use of jailhouse informants has been "very effective."

Alleged Bank Robber Steals Cab To Make His Getaway; Gets Arrested

People in California seem to have an odd habit of stealing taxi cabs so they have a fast way to get from point A to point B.

Last year, a San Diego man stole a taxi so he could drive himself home from jail. (Suffice to say, that didn't exactly work out in his favor.)

This time the incident took place in Santa Ana; members of the local police department say that last last week a suspected bank robber decided to carjack a taxi in hopes of getting away with his loot.

‘Mission Impossible’ Burglary Suspect Booked At Orange County Jail

A representative from the Pomona Police Department have confirmed that officers have arrested a man who is believed to be the "Mission Impossible" burglar.

Although the suspect was initially booked in at the Huntington Beach Jail he's since been transferred to the Orange County Jail where he's being held on burglary charges; he's also facing one count of committing another crime while out on a community release program from a prior offense.

Jailers have not said what the previous crime relates to, but they did say the second charge has a no bail hold. If that's lifted when he goes to …

These days, thanks to jail realignment, more and more inmates are being released from custody using GPS monitoring devices.

Some of them have yet to be convicted; others have been sentenced for their crimes.  Recent reports show that in Orange County, two convicted sex offenders who were released from the Orange County Jail on ankle-bracelet monitoring are now facing murder charges.

Mission Viejo Bondsman Pleads Guilty To 14 Felonies

A Mission Viejo bail bondsman pled guilty to 14 felonies after prosecutors determined he had hired Orange County Jail inmates to negotiate and sell bail bonds on his behalf.

Kenneth Hendrick, 50, has been sentenced to three years probation and will be required to serve one year in the Orange County jail.  The California Department of Insurance has also revoked his bail license meaning Hendrick will never be able to negotiate, transact or sell bail bonds again.

Authorities say the defendant commissioned nearly one dozen Orange County jail inmates to help him drum up business between March and December 2010.  Those …

Theo Lacy Jail Inmate Injured During Attack

A spokesperson for the Orange County jail system said an inmate at the Theo Lacy Jail sustained serious injuries during a recent attack.  The incident left the 28-year old with a large, horizontal cut over his throat.  His injuries are reported to be serious but not life threatening.

Jail staff said the incident took place when inmate dinners were being passed out.  The reason for the stabbing is not yet clear although it is not believed it was racially motivated or gang related. The weapon has not yet been located.   A total of eight inmates were in the common area at the …
