Laguna Niguel Approves Multi-Million Police Contract

It's just another day, another law enforcement services contract for members of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The most recent nod came earlier this week when the Laguna Niguel City Council agreed to keep the OCSD's current agreement in place.  But the biggest difference between this year and last, is the 8.45 percent services increase.

Ultimately, the city has agreed to pay more than $799,000 than it did last year.

Source close to city hall said that some of that is earmarked for a one-time equipment purchase.  Other portions of those funds will be used to help revamp an Aliso Viejo school …

OCSD Deputy Gets Probation For Pepper Spray On Pizza
People have all sorts of odd affinities when it comes to pizza toppings, but a chemical that sets your mouth, stomach and intestines on fire generally isn't one of them.

Last summer, Orange County Sheriff's Department deputy Juan Tavera chose to douse a teenager's pizza with pepper spray during a routine traffic stop.  The pie was in the back seat of the car when the event took place, the victim said, and it wasn't until he got home, dug in and his mouth started burning that he realized something was wrong.

The teen …

OCSD Deputies Get Call From Escort Who Got Stiffed, Say Man Torched Wife's Clothes After Getting Burned
The Orange County Sheriff's Department has had a few busy days on their hands.

First, they say a Rancho Santa Margarita man had taken a rather interesting approach to dealing with a marital spat.

The couple apparently got into a heated argument last weekend after enjoying a few too many adult beverages, and after the husband decided to smoke some pot.

Booze reportedly fueled arguments rarely end well, and this one is believed to have landed the man in jail.

It all started after the pair got …

OCSD Captain Proud Of Her Latina Roots

As it stands, Orange County Sheriff's Department Cmdr. Linda Solorza is the second highest ranking woman in the entire department.

Solorza said that despite her professional success she has never forgotten who she is and where she came from.  Her grandparents came to the US many years ago from Mexico, she said, and she is very proud of her Latina roots.

When her mom graduated from high school, she said, she was the first Hispanic homecoming queen the small town ever had.  Back then, small towns in rural Kansas weren't as progressive as they are today, there were places she was …

OC Sheriff Speaks About Her Battle With Breast Cancer

It's no secret that Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has been battling breast cancer.

The sheriff was diagnosed in 2012.  She is still undergoing radiation treatment.

She, along with numerous other breast cancer survivors attended the recent Komen Orange County Survivor Celebration and Awards Luncheon that was held in Corona Del Mar.

Hutchens said she first discovered the lump during a self examination.  She went to her doctor, who then diagnosed her with stage III breast cancer.  Treatment began immediately.  She is thankful that (more…)

OC Deputy Faces Jail for Pizza Topping

A deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Department has found himself in hot water after pepper spraying a teenager's pizza.

Pepper spray is bad enough when it gets in a person's eyes, and it apparently wreaks havoc on your insides when ingested.  A total of five people became sick as a result of the deputy's decision.

Authorities said the incident supposedly took place in the fall of 2012.  It was at that time that six-year OCSD veteran Juan Tavera pulled over an unnamed teenager during a routine traffic stop.

At some point in time, for reasons yet to be determined, Tavera decided …

OCSD Sheriff Says Jails Are Underfunded After Realignment

The realignment first took effect in October 2011.  Under that program, which is also known as AB 109, certain state prisoners started being transferred to county jails in order to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  The state promised it would provide additional funding to the OCSD in order to offset additional costs. Hutchens said more than 30,000 detainees have been shifted to county jails since AB 109 was implemented.

State officials disagree.  They have said that the reduction in the number of state prisoners is not due to them being shifted out.  Many of those numbers are due …

OC Sheriffs To Crackdown On Memorial Day Weekend DUIs

A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's Department has confirmed the OCSD will be cracking down on DUIs this upcoming holiday weekend.   Saturation patrols and DUI / driver's license checkpoints will take place throughout the county between Friday and Tuesday.  The purpose of these efforts is to arrest those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  These people not only endanger their own lives but the lives of everyone else on the road.   A secondary purpose of the crackdown is to educate sober drivers as to the dangers of impaired driving.

This time of year is filled …
