LAPD Urges HS Grads To Stay Safe, Sober

It's that time of year again.

This month, it's believed more than 27,000 senior high school students from throughout the city will celebrate their 12th grade graduation.

And for many, when this type of milestone achievement is reached, there's a certain amount of celebrating that goes along with it.  This is why the LAPD has teamed up with the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) for their 16th annual Safe and Sober Graduation Operation.

Using alcohol to enhance a celebration is ill advised, they said, with the most obvious problem being the fact that graduating seniors fall short of the legal drinking …

High-Tech Drones Give LAPD Additional Eyes In The Sky

For some, the LAPD's recent acquisition of two helicopter drones is quite the exciting event. Others, however, say it's a little too "Big Brother" for comfort.

The drones were a gift from the Seattle Police Department, according to sources, who had purchased them with federal grant funds.  Each is approximately three-feet wide, they said, and can be operated through the use of a remote control.

They are also outfitted with video cameras, which can help provide a birds-eye view of the areas the drones are patrolling.

Privacy rights advocates are worried that use of these types of devices will infringe upon the …

CHP Swaps Out Their Beamers For Hogs

It wasn't all that long ago that a number of law enforcement agencies started trading in their Harley Davidson motorcycles for a sleeker, sexier BMW model.

But now, it seems, at least one has decided to go back to the classic.

A Harley Davidson dealership in Northern California has confirmed they're building about 16 bikes per month for the California Highway Patrol, and they've delivered more than 100 hogs since winning the contract last year.

The dealership's manager said the CHP was very specific in terms of what it did and didn't want on the patrol bikes, and manager Mike Genthner said …

MashUp: LAPD, Ninjas, A Pirate And Candy Crush

It's one of those videos where, as you start to watch it, you find yourself cocking your head to the side and raising an eyebrow.

You want to shut it off, but the quirkiness keeps you watching much longer than you know you should.

However the latest 5-minute video PSA that's been released by the LAPD does have a purpose.

The ultimate message is simple: if you have valuable items in your car and you don't stash them out of sight, bad guys are likely to pilfer your goods.

This "24" parody begins as, special agent "Jack", has been captured by narco cyber …

More Than 200 Fallen LAPD Officers Honored In Memorial Ceremony

Leadership within the Los Angeles Police Department last week gathered to celebrate the lives of the more than 200 LAPD officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Those men and women, they said, served in different time periods throughout the departments 145+ year history.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said the ceremony touched home, especially in light of the deaths of three officers who recently lost their lives in traffic accidents.

Officers Nicholas Lee, Roberto Sanchez and Christopher Corijo all lost their lives in the past 90 days in the line of duty.  Sanchez was killed during a vehicle …

LAPD Improves Efficency By Working Smarter

Once a week, the leadership within the Los Angeles Police Department gets together to review crime trends, analyize statistics and to discuss strategies to improve performance.

During a recent meeting,  they reported homicides were down, but the instances of shots being fired and the number of aggravated assaults had climbed month-on-month.

This trend, they said, was largely tied to some upheaval in the leadership of a local gang, and department members said they'd already started on outreach to community members and church leaders to help negotiate a truce.

Today, it's not just about patrolling the streets.  It's about taking a proactive approach …

Backlash for NYPD Twitter Campaign Spreads to LAPD

According to a recent report, an attempt to show more positive interaction between the NYPD and members of the community has suffered some serious backlash.

The department launched a twitter campaign encouraging citizens to share photos of themselves with members of the NYPD and using the hashtag #myNYPD on the social network.

Instead, what the city got was a lot of negative images of police officers wielding batons and arresting protestors. This including one of an 84-year old man allegedly beaten for jaywalking.

A lot of the images were from incidents in the past; none too recent. This attempt to rebrand the …

Lamborghini Super Cruiser To Be Added To LAPD Fleet

It's safe to say the LAPD's new Lamborghini Gallardo is the most expensive vehicle in the department's fleet.

Although the vehicle is not off-the-lot new; it was donated by a generous citizen, a department spokesperson said they're thrilled to have it in their garage.

It's already been painted and logo graphics with the words protect-and-serve have already been affixed to the doors.

But for those hoping to see the LAPD's sports car patrolling the streets- you're out of luck.

CA Law Enforcement Admits To Tapping Your Cell Phone Data

9 law enforcement agencies say they use StingRay technology
Big Brother is watching.

A recent news report shows that law enforcement agencies from throughout the state are using high-tech surveillance that allows police to pinpoint your location using cell phone data.

A public information record request shows the San Jose Police Department, LAPD,  LASD and San Diego Police Department are  among those who use StingRay.

Although no one will say exactly how it works, it's believed that cellphone tracking is being used to thwart terrorist plans and to disrupt terrorist networks.

It's also being used to solve other types of crime.

LAPD Travels To Israel To Study Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Tactics

Grant funding used to pay for trip to the Middle East
The last time the LAPD traveled to Israel it the cost of the trip toppled $18,000. That money, according to sources  within the department, is considered to have been well spent.

Israel has a strong hold of counter-terrorism tactics, they said, and the Los Angeles Police Department feels that in making these types of trips, a lot can be learned.

LAPD Chief Bratton has described Israeli intelligence experts as being some of the best at what they do in all of the world.

The current trip, according to Deputy Chief Michale Downing,  …
