America’s Rap Sheet

If you watch the news you probably feel like the only news is bad news.

Every day, there are multiple reports of homicides, robberies, and rapes that are taking place across the country.

It seems like there is a crime epidemic, leaving most people to think that criminal activity must be at an all-time high these days.

While there is still a lot to worry about out there, it might surprise most people to know that this is not the most dangerous year, or even decade, in the U.S.

The Right To Be Out Of Jail

Arrests happen every day, and a lot of those arrests are absolutely necessary.

For many people, any interaction with a police officer can be intimidating.

Knowing what your rights are during these times can help you avoid an unnecessary arrest.

When you know the right things to say, you can stay within your rights and stay out of jail.

There's a ton of information in this infographic:

Assault with Odd Weapons

People are assaulted every day.

Most often, it is simply an assault with a fist or a foot. Other times it can be a baseball bat or a knife or a gun.

Then, there are times when the weapon is something completely unexpected.
Yes, Deer
Domestic disputes are rarely a laughing matter. They often end with arrest and tears.

In 2011, Chelsea Harrison, 23, was arrested for assaulting her live-in ex-boyfriend with a set of deer antlers after he broke down the door to the house the two shared.

Terry Nowakowski said that he and Harrison were only living together for financial reasons and to …

Man Arrested After Fight Over PB Sandwhich

It's unclear whether the sandwich in question involved creamy or chunky peanut butter.

The question as to what type of jelly may or may not have been involved still remains a mystery.

However, an Iowa man was jailed last weekend after he and his brother threw down over peanut butter sandwiches.

Authorities say the dispute broke out after 51 year-old Jerome Davis reportedly ate a half dozen PB sandwiches in about an hour.

This angered his brother for some reason and their disagreement quickly escalated into a shouting match.

At some point the now-defendant pulled out a switch blade and threatened to use it …

Unusual Animal Laws

Even our animals are subject to the laws of the land in this country.

Most of the laws that you will find on the books are more for the protection of the animals, though you will also see a few that can lead to jail time for the animals if they are caught breaking the laws.

From regulations on sleeping bears and hunting camels to animal mating protocol -- apparently, animal behavior cannot be tolerated.

Let's look at the details.

Unusual Laws: Watch Your Mouth

I’ll Say Whatever The ...  I Want
In America, we relish the fact that we have the right to say whatever we want.

But in some states, there are exceptions to that rule.

Even in this day and age, there are state laws that make it illegal to use profane language in public, but there are laws beyond that including laws that dictate where you can use certain language and even who you can encourage to use such language.

For example, 36-year-old Wesley Force Jr. was arrested for public cursing.

The incident occurred earlier this year when Force got into a disagreement with the …

The Revolving Prison Doors

In California, the number of people in jail and prisons is staggering.

Many of those people are still awaiting trial and sentencing.

In Contra Costa County, alone, 85% of the jail population is unsentenced. The counties face a lot of overcrowding thanks to the governor’s realignment plan and having a high recidivism rate doesn’t make things any easier.

There could be more financially smart solutions available to help ease the strain.

Let's look at the infographic on how California counties compare: (more…)

Busted in New York for Wearing A Mask

It’s true, is illegal to congregate in public with two or more people while each wearing a mask or any face covering which disguises your identity according to New York Penal Law 240.35(4).

The anti-mask law actually dates back to 1845 when farmers renting property in New York would dress in disguise (often as Native Americans) in order to attack members of law enforcement. They were protesting the lowering of wheat prices and forcible evictions.

Fast forward 165 years… really? That can’t be enforceable.

Now think 2011, the Occupy movement was sweeping across the globe with protests taking place in more than …
